Re: Return to Gender 101
Say what you will, I have no problem with succeeding via my pretty face. I'm confident that people attend my talks at conferences to check out my ass and stuff.
That's totally what men like me have to worry about.

Re: Return to Gender 101
On a related note: I may have mentioned this before, but a few years ago I attended a conference in which the keynote speaker was talking about populations of Pacific seabirds. After he was finished, a bunch of us were gathered around him, discussing his research.
A young woman who was a tenured professor at a nearby university said something along the lines of "Professor 'X', I think your research is very interesting, and I've sent you several e-mails about it over the past few months, but you've never replied." I should point out that she was, in fact, drop-dead gorgeous. She was also a tenured professor; a highly-educated, highly-intelligent, very accomplished professional.
He turned, looked her up and down in a very obvious manner, and finally replied, "If I'd known what you look like, I'd have answered those e-mails."
She didn't slap him, but I think a lot of people would have applauded if she had.

Re: Return to Gender 101
If the movies have taught me anything, it's that when you go to a conference like this, the odds are overwhelming that you'll meet a really attractive member of your preferred sex and wind up back in the hotel room having hot steamy sex.
For some reason though, this hardly ever happens to me when I go to a conference.

That's because you're far more interested in what people are saying.

Re: Return to Gender 101
Real World/Road Rules contestant was raped with a toothbrush while passed out; Viacom's responds that she was asking for it. No really.
Quote:
"In addition to failing to avail herself of [Viacom]'s policies and complaint procedures, Plaintiff failed to avoid the injuries of which she complains. For example, while she was a contestant on The Ruins, Plaintiff was frequently intoxicated (to an extent far greater than other contestants), rowdy, combative, flirtatious and on multiple occasions intentionally exposed her bare breasts and genitalia to other contestants."

The lawsuit was settled out of court.

So wait, let me get this straight: Slapping someone is a sufficiently-serious offense to get you thrown out, but raping someone isn't?

As if any of those so called excuses are reason enough to violate somebody in any way let alone sexual assault. I loved, as in hated very much, that Viacom tried to poo poo the lawsuit by saying none of the vents for which they were being sued happened in American and thus were not under the purview of the California legal system.

Re: Return to Gender 101
So, I don't know the whole context of this because all I've seen is what my friend just retweeted. It seems a British Conservative MP resigned because of child custody issues and a Labour MP was an ass about it on Twitter. Here's her open letter to the Labour leader and deputy leader.
Part 1
Part 2

Re: Return to Gender 101
Wow, does that guy project much? He keeps banging on about abortion and birth control being of low priority to voters, but doesn't even get that it's Republican candidates who keep making it a central issue of their campaigns.

Re: Return to Gender 101
Gotta love Larry Flynt
Quote:
"accept for purposes of this reward any verifiable transcript of
your personal conversations with God; letters, email, text messages or videos from God, or messages addressed to you from God transmitted by any third party, including the Republican National Committee or the Romney/Ryan campaign."
Flynt also suggests that divine intervention must have happened for Mourdock to make the statements in the first place.
"I assume that you would not have made this statement unless you had been authorized by God. No one who believes in God would ever use the Almighty's name in vain. That would be blasphemy.".

12 years old is a baby.
I am here to share this feminist programmer's work, sick of "that's what she said" jokes, she made a bot that responded with feminist quotes "that's what she really said. " Nicely, how she did it included.

While I'm here I might as well mention the Smurfette principle. You're not really writing a strong female character when you only have one woman in your principal cast and they're written this way.
