Re: Return to Gender 101
No no no no.
He clarified this after the debate.
God didn't intend for you to get raped, he intended for you to get pregnant.
By rape.
Wait, no that doesn't work.
Aha! What he means is that God knew you were going to be raped, so he decided to make it not quite so bad by giving you a gift. The gift of a rapist's baby. Now, the fact that you didn't want it is irrelevant - if God gives you a gift, you keep that fucking gift, okay?!
Now, some of you might say, well while God was giving out gifts concerning your rape, why didn't he give you the gift of NOT BEING RAPED?
To that, I reply: God works in mysterious ways. Mysterious, rapey ways.

Also free will.
God can't interfere with the free will of the rapist. As far as her free will not to have a baby ... well that's just splitting hairs!

God's not exactly big on asking women their consent before he decides to impregnate them anyway, as you might recall from the Bible.

Mention of vagina causes evangelical bookshop to refuse book, claims author | Books | guardian.co.uk
I suspect the reason so many evangelicals have turned out to be closeted gays may be linked with their almost pathological fear of vaginas.

Re: Return to Gender 101
Some of us clearly did not attend our midnight masses at St. Peter's. It's from the Vulgate gospel of Luke. When the Archangel Gabriel informs Mary that God was going to knock her up, she replies "Ecce ancilla Domini. Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum."
Also it's a painting by pre-Raphaelite artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, which is what Clutch up dere is referring to.

Mea in Latina est rust-oleum quoque.
Yet it still made more sense not understanding it than whatever that guy was trying to get across. What's next in the rape kit, a pregnancy test.

I'm a bit amused at the many comments proving her right. Damn easy to rile up anonymous crybaby guys on the internet, just point out a few guys being stupid and watch the many 'How dare you call me a misogynist you horrible bitch, now let me tell you what you really mean...' comments. Almost like they take personal offense for some reason.

This could go so many places, but here is good. GOP Rape Advisory Chart. I'd post the picture, but it's pretty big so the link will do.

Since I wasn't there I would be more inclined to believe the person who was both there and a little creeped by it.
And since it probably wasn't the first time and obviously not the last time you have to say that erring on the side of "guy creeped me out". Seems reasonable. Even if he was a harmless quiet puppy stalker who took no for an answer.

Re: Return to Gender 101
She had spent all day talking about sexism and sexual harrassment at conventions and announced she was exhausted and going to bed. This stranger totally ignored the clearly set boundaries. In an elevator. At 4am. She said "Guys, don't do that". She didn't call him a creep or shame him or anything.

I think the point (or at least what I take away from it) is not what happened in the elevator, but the fallout afterward. All that FUCK YOU BITCH THERE'S NO SEXISIM AND I'LL RAPE YOU FOR EVEN SAYING THERE IS! stuff.

Re: Return to Gender 101
This is somewhat off-topic, but I'm not sure where else to put it. Last night on Supernatural they did an episode that was a beautiful indictment of nice guy syndrome. It was even more effective because it started out with the POV of the nice guy and it made the viewer sympathetic to him. This was a found-footage episode and most of the footage was shot by the nice guy, who was a film major. By the end of the show the ugliness and entitlement behind the nice guy facade became clear.
I was totally excited about this aspect of the show. So much that I rushed to the AV Club episode review to post my comment about how much I loved it before I read the review or comments. Then I went back and discovered that absolutely no one else had picked up on the nice guy syndrome aspect of the episode and they weren't even responding to my mention of it. So I'm bummed and I came here hoping to find a more sympathetic audience.
