Actually, that's incorrect.

There are at least two mechanisms that have been proposed which explain why female masturbation could be adaptive.


First, it allows a women to exercise more control over her fertility. The contractions of the uterus and vagina that occur during female orgasm help to draw any semen that is present deeper into the reproductive tract, and so make conception more likely. Hence, if she has had more than one sexual partner, a woman can (consciously or not) favor one male's sperm over that of the other through masturbation.


Second, through stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system (as occurs during orgasm), a person can effectively "reset" his or her glucocorticoid levels and so reduce the harmful effects of chronic stress.
