What the fuck is up with Windows 10?

One more thing I just discovered, which is very very important:

If your Win10 computer is in an unbootable state due to driver problems, you either reformat or use the 21st century equivalent of a windows 98 recovery floppy, because f8 doesn't give you safe mode any more. They removed that boot wait for your convenience, to let your PC irrecoverably screw up faster.

That Win 10 PC I complained about with the noisy hard drive? I couldn't put up with it any longer so I stripped it down, took out both the hard disks, fitted a different hard disk and formatted it with Ubuntu Linux - and just Linux: it no longer has Windows at all.

And it makes just the same noises still! It turns out that the PSU fan rattles like a failing hard drive - why it occasionally goes quiet for a few seconds I don't know - it's still spinning at the same speed.

So I feel pretty stupid about this, but I thought I should let you know anyway.

What a coincidence - I also found out about this just a couple weeks ago. Apparently there was a graphics driver upd- LOL J/K GOOD LUCK W/ALLA THAT. That was a fun day.

Bearings.. I had a fridge fan which did that, loudly, at inconvenient times of the night. The bearing was loose, leaving the fan free to rattle as it turned. Most of the time it settled into rattling exactly the rate it turned, making a tolerably quiet buzz, but sometimes it would rattle twice the rate it was turning, making an inconceivable honking noise, sending me lurching out of bed to hammer at the back of the fridge until it lapsed back into fundamental mode.

Got to love that message though. There was a "problem". The problem is that instead of making your crap better you decide to just make it more of a bother to use anything else because you know that most people won't bother to change it. Bunch of douche-canoes.

Better than 8.1 on my POS HP Touchscreen with an AMD A4 processor, but still too much of a resource hog. (Not a knock on Windows, per se--I quite like Win 10 on my Mac--and Ubuntu Unity was too demanding, as well.) After trying out several varieties of Linux, I am now using Ubuntu MATE, which makes the machine usable.

My computer automatically updated to Windows 10 the other day. Boy was it a pain in the fucking ass. At this point, there's not much I can do about it. One positive I do like about it is that it seems to run pretty quickly. I do need to figure out how to reliably find the control panel, though.

You can pin anything onto the start menu - which you can also make smaller simply by clicking and dragging it. I got unpinned a lot of the things that were on there by default.

Typing things into the Search Windows box brings things up really well too, if you know what you're looking for.

CAVEAT: That box, the Start Button, and Cortana like to freeze up, and when that happens, welp, I did a thing with the command prompts that reinstalled the basic apps on the machine. That used to work and is usually the first result you get in searching for that problem. It does not work anymore! Instead, while it unfreezes your Start button et al, it breaks all your apps. Google is now my calculator. Until I can find a reliable way to fix it, that doesn't involve the better part of a day.

Actually I'm not sure there is one, except that bash is one of several alternatives command line shells so you could have "the Linux command line" without bash, instead using zsh or csh or sh. If you have no shell at all, you'd have a command line that you can't command.

Seriously, though, I was having a hard time figuring what they could mean by the linux command line and the bash shell. The link you added just makes me more confused and enraged!

With this new addition, Ubuntu users will be able to run Ubuntu simultaneously with Windows. This will not be in a virtual machine, but as an integrated part of Windows 10.

The deal about not being in a virtual machine rests on the concept of container technology I think. I'm not entirely familiar with it. I had a bunch of stuff shipped from South Africa in a 20' container but I don't think it's that.

It seems like virtualisation, but not as we know it (Jim).

It's pretty much the windows equivalent of "WINE" -- a translator which maps Linux system calls into Windows ones. It's not virtualization as such, since there isn't an extra layer of hardware or software: The code is run natively.

Loading an executable isn't difficult, running it isn't either, x86 machine code is x86 machine code. It can just slot that into memory without having to really worry what the code means. It's the bits and pieces where the program asks the operating system to do some work (open a file, read from a socket, etc) which are tricky. Different OSes do that in different ways.

WINE lets Windows programs run in Linux by doing its own handling of that and handing them off to real Linux kernel routines. This almost certainly does something similar.

PCWorld explains how Bash will work in Windows.

This solution will be an app available in the Windows Store, and it will provide a full Ubuntu image that runs in userspace as a program on your desktop. Programs compiled for Linux will just run without even needing to be recompiled for Windows. You can use Ubuntu’s apt-get command to download and install programs, and it’ll just work. I signed up to be a Windows Insider on the "Fast Ring" so I could get the first build of Win10 with the native Bash, and it works as advertised. So cool to be able to grep, ssh, etc.--not to mention copy files between Windows & Linux--at the command line without needing Cygwin, WinSCP, or PuTTy.
