It is Labor Day in the US. What, if anything, are your plans?

I plan to take it easy and maybe go in to town for a late lunch at a Chinese buffet.

I'll be pining for the days when I had local friends and accquaintences with whom to throw a barbecue and drink excessively. Of course I won't be pining for the feeling I would typically have the morning after, as I tried to remember who I had offended and in what way, and whether I was likely to end up merely embarrassed or in jail as a result.

I'm sitting here at home, ticked that I couldn't do the traditional 'Bama trip because I had to go to the office today. Once there, there was nothing for me to do so I stood around with my thumb up my ass until they needed me.

"Hey, Sharon, we have all the connections restored. Run upstairs and see if your computer works."

Twenty minutes later and I'm all, "Yep, everything works. Internet, intranet, iSeries, servers ... the whole nine yards."

"Great. You can go home now if you want."

*sigh*

We have been cleaning the boat so we can put it back in the water. I just have a difficult time going "back to normal" with all of this. I feel like I shouldn't have fun or something. I believe it's called survivor's guilt, but whatever it is I just can't seem to get myself to just be 'okay'.

I went swimming. My Labor Day resolution (What do you mean I got the wrong day? :chin:

) is to begin regular exercise again. I'm starting to develop a fat deposit around the middle again. Swimming is fun though.

I have dishes, some picking up. Some Invader Zim to finish watching. ( :wink:

) and some reading to do. Oh and I should get on those pictures, but I may put that off until tomorrow. :dunno:

You wanna know something odd? For some reason when, I preview my posts, the smilies don't animate in Mozilla. I find that really odd. They do not exhibit this behaviour when I post using Internet Explorer.

That's weird. I just tested in Mozilla 1.7.11 and Firefox 1.0.6 (both on WinXP) and they were animated.

No big plans for me today, just chore-like stuff:

Go to supermarket (I hate this chore and have put it off so long, my bird had to have canned fruit, frozen veggies and dry pasta for breakfast)
Mow my lawn
See if my notebook computer can read my dead desktop's harddrive.
Answer some emails (long overdue).

I might buy a new vacuum cleaner. And I hope to splash around in my pool for a bit sometime today.

After laboring laboriously until 6:00 AM, I rode Moby the Great White Frigidaire home and after a nice long "reading" in the "library", slipped out of my clothes and into bed for a rest. I got up at the crack of Noon, actually more like 12:45 or so, dipped my wick, took a quick shower and took the family out to lunch at a crappy Texas Roadhouse wannabe, Logan's Roadhouse. Due to extremely slow service the manager gave me the employee discount, 50% off. Once overindulged, went to Barnes and Noble and bought cookbooks for my daughters and a book on the world's religions for my youngest daughter. Then we went home where I got a good shoulder rub while watching the Noon Channel 6 news on Channel 53. Went out and played with the little colt for a while, scrubbed out the horse's water troughs, fed them and went into the house to rest. And here I am, winding down for the evening, feeling guilty for having it so good while other people in the world, especially along the Gulf coast are suffering, thirsty and hungry.

Well, I got up this morning and then bid goodbye to my houseguest from Idaho. I enjoyed a cuppa joe and a slice of homemade apple pie that was the product of the first annual football/pie gathering of the usual suspects.

I puttered in the garden; pulling grass, mostly.

My gf came by early afternoon and we went to see a free performance of As You Like It by Shakespeare-in-the-Parks on the green at a local private college. Afterwards, we went out to dinner at a local whitetrash restaurant.

Now, we're just kicking back...relaxing...napping.

I spent my Labor Day calling my ISP every hour to try to find out when their service would be back.

The service was out from Sunday morning at 3 a.m. for 44 straight hours. They said that they had a denial of service attack and it took them that long to find the offending computer and shut it down. Unbelievable!

I'd returned from a long weekend trip to Chicago on Sunday, so Labor Day was basically just a day of relaxing/recuperating and getting ready to get back to normal work days again. I also bought a bike lock for my bike so that I could ride to work and avoid using any gasoline.

5,027 days later: I'm gonna drop a few things here because I want a thread that discusses Labor- that thing most humans are engaged in, as workers without stake or equity in the means of production.

The long gap is a good metaphor for US Labor- meaning the organized sector of workers, as well as the unorganized workers- that has taken a serious beating since the 1970's. Productivity continues on an increasing trend line, but wages are flat while all other costs- especially student loans, health care, and housing- have exploded, while pensions have been systematically dismantled or raided. The purposeful and targeted collapse of unionized labor in the US has coincided with an unsurprising loss of worker power.

The good news (for labor) is that unions and unionization are on the rise; and to illustrate that today:

Front-of-house staff sell tickets, serve concessions, operate projectors and clean up theater floors. At the Film Society, they’re mainly young people, including some who are LGBTQ2S, people of color and women.

They’re drawn to work in an environment where their cultural interests can connect them to a community that enjoys critical conversations. On the other hand, their wages have been kept low and they have little say in how things are run.

According to one theater worker, management apparently hopes that workers’ interest in the organization will somehow compensate for inadequate wages. At the same time, they demean them by calling them “the popcorn people.” Workers’ previous attempts to demand higher wages continually met with management’s dismissive attitude.

When the Independent Spirit award-winning movie, “Sorry to Bother You,” played in the theater, the front-of-house staff learned by observing the characters — low-wage call center workers — and they mobilized. After contacting the AFL-CIO, they were put in touch with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. According to IATSE, “Authorization cards went out to the bargaining unit in December, and by the end of February, more than 80% of people had signed on.”

The article goes on to relate how Boots Riley heard about their effort and sent them a support video; they successfully unionized in April.
