Seeking Houseplant Advice
One of my co-workers gave me a plant cutting in a vase and I'm wondering if it's ready for the long dirt nap.

Re: Seeking Houseplant Advice
It's ready! Dirt/pot should be about equal to the size of the crown.

Re: Seeking Houseplant Advice
Hmm, the crown? If that means what I think it means that's a pretty large pot! Are there standard pot sizes? How often do I have to water it after it's planted?

Re: Seeking Houseplant Advice
I let those things dry out between watering.
A plant will often grow to the size of the pot.
I don't know if there are standard sizes, but they come in quart and gallon sizes. A quart would be a good start.

Pot and then wait about three days before watering.
Bright light, but not direct sunlight.
Water about once a week.
Start drinking heavily.
Eat Doctor X.

I'd put it outside, were it mine. Those can grown huge in the right climate, which I assume would include Texas.

It game from a giant plant as I understand it. That's why my co-worker was giving away cuttings.

Diffembachia / Dumb Cane / Leopards Lily
The above site ~ PlantCare.com ~ is a good site for general & detailed info on thousands of plants.

You are correct. Great. Now I have a whole thread of people talking funny that will have to wait until I get home tonight.

Re: Seeking Houseplant Advice
Okay, so it took me a few days to get around to buying a pot and soil. Sue me!
Anyway, here is the plant in its new home. Thanks for all the tips!

i am impressed that you have the time to care for a plant and look at 30,000 years worth of art.

Re: Seeking Houseplant Advice
I do not remember that plant or know whatever became of it.
I do however have some new plants for which I am seeking advice.
My sister gave us a plant bouquet last year and several of the plants have survived my re-planting and sporadic watering, but they all look sickly.
I water them about once a week (when I remember) and they are all in a room with indirect sunlight (some getting more than others). What am I not doing?

Re: Seeking Houseplant Advice
The middle one is a maranta of some variety, and I think it looks fine.
The right-hand one ... not sure ... is it a miniature yucca or something like that? It might need a much bigger pot.

Re: Seeking Houseplant Advice
Do they have exposed roots? The one on the left looks like it does. Maybe they need some more soil?

Re: Seeking Houseplant Advice
I have some African violets that are driving me crazy. One has some leaves that are turning kinda orange. Any idea what could be causing that? And how long are the flowers supposed to last?

Re: Seeking Houseplant Advice
The right hand one could be what we call a spider plant. They grow shoots different to their normal leaves, with new baby spider plants growing on the end. Like many pot plants, they like plenty of daylight but not too much direct sunlight.
