Let's share our favorite Bible verses! Try to limit these to short passages.
Here are a few of my favorites. These are from the KJV and emphasis is mine.
11:13 And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls ; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,
[...]
11:19 And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.
Leviticus 11:13, 11:19
(Bats are birds, you know)
Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.
Leviticus 19:17
(Fred Phelps should take heed)
And the LORD was with Judah; and he drave out the inhabitants of the mountain; but could not drive out the inhabitants of the valley, because they had chariots of iron.
Judges 1:19
(Damn those iron chariots! They're Yahweh's only weakness!)
As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more.
Job 7:9
The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.
Psalms 115:17
One of my favorite books is Ecclesiastes, there are a few interesting verses there:
For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth? Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?
Ecclesiastes 3:19-22
(alpha should probably like this verse given his supposed views on animal rights)
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
Ecclesiastes 9:5
Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.
Ecclesiastes 9:10
(In other words, the dead know nothing and do nothing)
For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses.
Ezekiel 23:20
(In other words, they had big donkey dicks and shot as much cum as a horse. This Bible stuff is HOT!)
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
Matthew 6:5-8
(don't pray in public and don't make overly long prayers)
How about you?
Yeah I know, I could find a lot more inspiring verses if I wanted to look, but I was going for more subversive favorites

Reason: adding in emphasis (d'oh!)
I like some of the wisdom and poetry of the Bible. One of my favorite verses:
Wisdom 7:7
Therefore I prayed, and prudence was given me,
I pleaded and the spirit of Wisdom came to me,
I preferred her to scepter and throne,
And deemed riches nothing in comparison with her,
nor did I liken any priceless gem to her;
Because all gold, in view of her, is a little sand,
and before her, silver is to be accounted mire.
Beyond health and comliness I loved her,
And I chose to have her rather than the light,
because spledonr of her never yields to sleep.
Yet all good things together came to me in her company,
and countless riches in her hands;
And I rejoiced in them all, because Wisdom is their leader,
though I had not know that she is the mother of these.
I could've written those lines, I feel that way so strongly.
Blessed above women shall Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite be, blessed shall she be above women in the tent.
He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish.
She put her hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workmen's hammer; and with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote off his head, when she had pierced and stricken through his temples.
At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay down: at her feet he bowed, he fell: where he bowed, there he fell down dead.
The mother of Sisera looked out at a window, and cried through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long in coming? why tarry the wheels of his chariots?
Her wise ladies answered her, yea, she returned answer to herself,
Have they not sped? have they not divided the prey; to every man a damsel or two; to Sisera a prey of divers colors, a prey of divers colors of needlework, of divers colors of needlework on both sides, meet for the necks of them that take the spoil?
So let all thine enemies perish, O LORD: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.
The shift in narrative perspective as Sisera's mother nervously imagines his victory over the Israelites, even while we know that her son's already been slaughtered in his sleep by Jael, communicates a primal ferocity. We're supposed to sympathize with her for a moment -- just to really get the slap of the last verse. Beautiful literary effect.
Sorry to be such a killjoy, but unlike you heathens ... I take this stuff seriously.
John 15:17 : This I command you, to love one another.
It's a good rule of thumb, and does a pretty good job of convicting me each day, because I know I can't love everyone; there are too many people who piss me off in life. But I'm trying to work on it.

I was just taking a look at it and it didn't seem anything special.
It's pretty obvious why I picked the ones I did - they had something funny/absurd in them, or they said that there was no afterlife, or said something that I don't think certain prominent Christians pay enough attention to.
What rhythm? Your reasons were valid, MS, put 'em back up. I don't think erimir's being a nazi about what can and can't be posted, he was just after an explanation.
EDIT - MS edited, so my 'rhythm' comment doesn't make any sense now

Sorry. I'm trying to keep up with the edits even my own.

Well, the Bible may be something that you don't pay special attention to unless it is to amuse you, but my advise to you. Grow up and be a man. Whether you do it by biblical principles or by non biblical principles it will require the same. Respect. And if you're a male, the utmost respect for the woman that you plan to make your wife. Because she will ultimately make you the man that you could never hope to be on your own.
That's what Proverbs 31 says.

I'm going to post some that I find meaningful or beautiful.
Genesis 1:2 "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters."
Ecclesiastes 4:1-3 "So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter. Wherefore I praised the dead which are already dead more than the living which are yet alive. Yea, better is he than both they, which hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun."
Matthew 7:1-3 "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"
and of course the entire book of Revelations.

What if I wanna be a woman? :p

Proverbs 31 is heterosexist garbage, is what it is. (I'm j/k)
I'm gay, btw :p
Anywho, you can post which verses are your favorite for whatever reason. Obviously, my choices weren't meant to be inspiring - except for the one about hate and the ones about death being final, which I chose because they represent my views to some extent, they were picked because they are troublesome verses. Well, the ones about death I also picked because they were troublesome, so it was a little bit of both there.
I suppose the smutty verse might inspire some people to something...
So you can pick them because you find them inspiring, beautiful, funny, troublesome for Christians, you agree with them, whatever.
I don't have favorites except maybe for the last one Ymir's Blood quoted and another later in the same chapter.
That says it all. It even says it says it all. If everyone lived this one there would be a lot less strife.

ms_ann_thrope. This verse always reminds me of the Oklahoma City bombing. When I lived in Oklahoma City, my parish was right across the street from the Murrah building. Actually, the Murrah building was built on land taken from my parish using emminent domain. At any rate, when the Murrah bombing happened, it did extensive damage to my parish. Separated the roof from the rest of the church (blew it straight upwards), shattered all but two of the stained glass windows, almost killed a couple of people inside the church and rectory.
Anyways, when the church was rebuilt/renovated, they placed a statue across the street in memoriam of those who died in the Murrah building. The link here shows a picture of that statue (it is the last picture). On the base, the words "And Jesus Wept" are inscribed.

The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans, Chapter 8, Verses 38-39
For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
I like this because I see a lot of Christians who are absolutely terrified that they will screw up and make God unable to love them.

I've always been rather fond of the internet open letter to Dr. Laura Schlessinger...
Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a US radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet. (I have inserted the applicable biblical text - from English Standard Version)
I would point out here that Leviticus 19:19 applies not only to sowing fields, but garments made of mixed fabrics... So, all you out there who wear cotton or nylon jackets lined with fleece or wool, or even cotton/poly blend tee-shirts or socks....well, YOU ARE AN ABOMINATION IN THE EYES OF THE LORD!

I had only ever seen pictures of the Empty Chairs monuments; thank you for sharing the additional info about your parish's memorial. Quite fitting use of the verse indeed.
This is the heart-warming tale of how the prophet Elisha, when mocked by some boys for being bald, asked God for vengeance, which God immediately provided in the form of two bears that ran out of the woods and mauled the boys to death. Elisha was then able to continue his journey without further harassment.
Here's the Contemporary English Bible version:
2 Kings 2:23-25
23*Elisha left and headed toward Bethel. Along the way some boys started making fun of him by shouting, “Go away, baldy! Get out of here!”
24*Elisha turned around and stared at the boys. Then he cursed them in the name of the Lord. At once two bears ran out of the woods and ripped to pieces 42 of the boys.
25*Elisha went up to Mount Carmel, then returned to Samaria.
Or you may prefer the, perhaps more poetic, Authorized King James version:
23*And he went up from thence unto Beth-el: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. 24*And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them. 25*And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.
6. ceptimus beseeched the Lord, asking, "O God! When quoting Holy Scripture, is it better to bump an old thread, or start a new one?"
7. And the LORD answered, saying, "Have I not endowed thee with Free Will? Thou must make thine own choice - but I warn thee that thy will be mocked for it, whichever route thou choosest."
