The problem was that the city of Kent didn’t just fire his ass first - they gave him the equivalent of a stern talking-to. They only tried to fire him after the public was rightfully outraged. Had they just fired him first, they wouldn’t have to pay to get him to resign.

True, but when the deprivation involves use of a dangerous weapon and results in death, the main statute involved in these indictments authorizes a life sentence.

So there I was, pulled up to the school after getting reports of an attack, slowly get out of the car and mosey on down to the office, and omg I hear shots, the report wasn’t a lie, and for some reason I’ve left my rifle back in the car even though its where I keep my testes. Why it would be a waste of time to make the quick dash back through safe territory to gain a weapon, I should head deeper into the school where we’ve placed the supply drop. I hit B to crouch roll around the corners as I hold the key that can access the safe of weapons, the PBX130, mass printed and issued to all in the sheriffs agency, only this key, often purchasable online, can gain access to a weapon, more ammo and the breaching tools I will need to break down students barricaded in their classes on the next level.
(Most fire/safety things behind lock and key use a pretty simple key common to the region, so that fire fighters don’t have to fumble through keys, sometimes local law enforcement even thinks these keys are protected secrets and not easily to make and purchasable online. There’s a good chance they are going to make the safe accessible in some way to a common emergency key.)
Can't encumber the officers with a big map book showing the location of the gun locker in each school, and other public building. It would take too long for the officers to identify which building they're in, find the appropriate page in the map book, work out where they are on the map, so they can navigate to the locker. Much simpler to paint fluorescent orange arrows on the walls / floors / ceilings, throughout the buildings, indicating, "This way to guns."
No need to fumble for keys to open the the lockers: better to have combination locks, all sharing the same, easy-to-remember code, such as 123 or 911, which will be kept secret, known only by responsible officers.
These are bullshit half measures, we need real policy that will protect children.

You know, it never ceases to amaze. Pigs have been arguing for decade after decade after decade in courts all over the U.S. -- with spectacular success, I might add -- that lying is an indispensable component of police work and that cops would be hopelessly gimped if information obtained by lying were deemed inadmissible in court. And yet, the revelation that the kid was unarmed is a "stunning new twist" in the eyes of journalists .

To give further context: It is explicitly because they didn't get to capture or kill their target or anyone they thought was their target. Not because they did something wrong, but because they didn't yet get the chance to do something wrong.
