Levi's CEO says not to wash your jeans.

I read that last night and have been mulling on it. One thing in the article stood out to me. Anderson Cooper wears the same jeans every day and washes them twice in six months. Can you imagine any female anchor or presenter getting away with

A) Wearing jeans
B) Wearing the same outfit every day
C) Washing them only four times a year

The whole thing just screams out at me as a big pile o' privilege.

Since my denim jeans last a long time even if I do wash them, I'm going to keep washing them. I mean, it's not like I'm using more water and soap. They go in with other items that, you know, even a luddite would say is a good idea to keep clean. And if you're worried about spending too much energy on drying them, LPT - put in a large already dry (and clean!) towel to speed up that process. (Alternatively, of course, air dry jeans are p cool.)

And to answer Janet's question. (Rhetorical? lol) Women can't even wear jeans on television. Not news women anyway. Ugh, what are you some kind of liberal bra burning man hating ultra feminist?

You know, I can see the appeal of raw denim, where you get untreated jeans and then you wet them and mold them to your body, and wait a really long time to wash them. The concept is intriguing, and the results can LOOK pretty cool. I'd kind of like to do that myself, but for the fact that they do not smell cool. They smell like rotten fruit and dead mice, and I don't want to be gross like that, even if I could get away with it.

And just off the top of my head, I can remember THREE discrete instances where I had to sit down with a grownassed man and explain to him that he was smelly and dirty and that he needed to wash his clothes and maybe start wearing socks or something. And one where I would have, had I not had to fire him for unrelated reasons first. They get acclimated to their own stink and don't even realize it, so someone has to tell them. (None of them were Matlock, BTW, just in case anyone is suspecting him. He is generally a pretty clean and OK smelling guy.)

So yes. I am picturing a bunch of both official and de facto "Moms" having to clean up after this little PR campaign. Thanks, Anderson Cooper. Thanks, Levi's jerkface.

Thanks.

You know what sounds like privilege to me?
Chip ChippersonCEO Chip Bergh beckoned attendees to forgo the washing machine in favour of "spot cleaning" their jeans with a "sponge or toothbrush."

Having the time to 'spot clean' each pair of jeans with a toothbrush.

Raw denim is a different matter than most jeans, which are often run through an acid and large rock tumbler bath to produce that aged look before going on the rack for >$100. I doubt anything in a normal washing machine comes close.

Mick can be pretty ripe when he gets back from tour after wearing the same jeans on stage for months. I never had 'the talk' though, because I'm sure he knows it.

I wear jeans (or nearly any of my pants) until they're either so dirty they can stand on their own in the corner or they smell bad. I smell my clothes before I put them on. Fuck me, right? That usually means about three days, max. Then again, all I wear is...

Three days is nothing. I sometimes wear jeans three times between washings if they're not stained or smelly. And if I do it, it must be OK.

One of the guys I did a come to Jesus for didn't know that anyone ever washed jeans. He thought they were unwashable or something. And he wore them every day--I think he only had one pair. Another almost never showered or washed his clothes, and was convinced, incorrectly, that he had no body odor. I had been sniffing around looking for a rotten sandwich in a drawer or something when I realized it was him I was smelling. The third one: Swiss. Need I say more?

Speaking of jeans and washing them. I used to wash my jeans at the carwash daily. Of course, it was when I worked in the oilfield and they were nasty dirty every day. Nothing like 3,000 psi of hot soapy water to clean 'em right up. No, I wasn't wearing them when I washed them, I put them flat on the concrete.

Back then, tighty whiteys was the only kind I wore. I probably should have washed them at the car wash too.

I guess I've been white privileged all my life. There weren't many colored folk where I grew up, and even few where I first started working in earnest. Otherwise, I might not have gotten one of those ditch-digging entry level jobs I got when I started. Wait, what?

Also douche can't do math, 3.6% is huge when out of a population of 300 Million.
At almost the same size that's basically like saying "Hey NYC, we don't care about you!"

That's what I was thinking, 3.6% is a significant amount of people. It's about 1 in 28 people. So take one kid from every class in America and just tell them, I don't give a shit about your issues. Fucking christ.

Other interesting observations from this insightful guy:

Yes, I think it could be because yelling and berating, even to the point of verbal abuse, is more socially acceptable than physical abuse. You're really onto something!

(That's without even getting into whatever idiocy he defines as "verbal emasculation".)

In other news, "Thing's I haven't personally seen don't exist." has been picked up by NBC. Episode 1: Jim reminds you to beat your wife indoors for plausible deniability.

Also I like how he has to say 'rarely' so apparently he has actually seen a woman get physically abused in public, just not like every block, so no worries really.

Imagine if the entire US said "we could give a rat's ass about the issues of Canada | Britain | Australia | Nigeria | Sudan | Luxembourg".

Wait ... you don't have to imagine ...
