Anyone know anything about Honolulu, Hawaii?
I didn't want to start a new thread - So the MorMan and I are going to Hawaii - some time in Maui and then Honolulu.
Who has stayed in Honolulu and can recommend reasonable accommodation in a great location? Also things not to miss - must do activities/sites.
Thanks ff'ers

Re: Anyone know anything about Honolulu, Hawaii?
Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii. It's on the island of Oahu. There's a beach there called Waikiki. I been there once when I was like 10. So probably not that helpful but let's see what I can remember.
We took a bus tour up Diamondhead and through the Dole pineapple fields. They gave me a fresh pineapple to keep cuz it was my birthday. I got killer canker sores in my mouth from all the pineapple I ate. I also ate a ton of shave ice (I forget what they call it, maybe shave ice) and I got a really really really bad sunburn. We went to a Luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center, but I have since learned that the PCC is fairly problematic, as is the American occupation of Hawaii in general, so best not to Google that until you get back.
That's it! Never been to Maui or anywhere else. Sounds like fun, enjoy
Oh yeah! One more thing I know. Honolulu is the only U.S. capital that has a royal residence, which I guessed correctly on Final Jeopardy, but everybody on TV got it wrong, probably because people are so euro-centric.

Helpful, will watch out for pineapple acid and go see Diamond Head.
I really don't want to see a touristy luau, but the MorMan wants to see women in coconut bras. (as opposed to Magic Underwear)

Re: Anyone know anything about Honolulu, Hawaii?
My info on Honolulu is even older than ES’s, but I’ve been to Maui more recently. The road to Hana, atop the central peak, is the one of the main Maui-specific attractions. If you like driving around a mountain and enjoying the scenery, unique flora, etc., then it’s worth doing. If you’re the type who hates car rides and just wants to get there, don’t bother. There’s very little to do once you get there, other than seeing natural beauty. Then you just turn around and go back down.
Maui’s rep is as the most party-down island, so if you like nightclubs and such, that’s the easiest island to find that scene in abundance. Also it has the easiest access to Molokini, probably the most popular snorkeling spot. The helicopter tours are probably good (but insanely expensive, even for Hawaii), but the real island to see via air is Kauai.

I have never been there, but I once listened to a pretty good podcast about Hawaii. I don't remember what it was called, though.

Re: Anyone know anything about Honolulu, Hawaii?
You should visit the volcanoes. Best seen at night: from a boat if you can arrange it, but on foot is cool* too.
*the dangerously hot kind of cool.

Re: Anyone know anything about Honolulu, Hawaii?
The volcanoes won't be that dangerously hot if you're not going to the island of Hawai'i (i.e. the Big Island). I guess the one on Maui is technically still active, but it last erupted like >300 years ago.
I've been to the Big Island only (that I remember* anyway), and unfortunately I mostly spent time at the resort. But if you did go there, I'd suggest checking out Waipi'o Valley, one or more of the volcanoes and Onomea Bay if you're passing near it. 'Akaka Falls was fine, and also worth checking out if you're going near it. I didn't get to see the lava flowing into the ocean because we didn't plan well enough.
I would totally go back, except I would not stay in a resort if I went again (unless it happened to be the cheapest option for whatever reason, hotel points or whatever). Overpriced food that's nothing special, I'd rather explore food elsewhere + the best sights are going to require you to leave anyway.
Even if you don't go to the Big Island, I would suggest that if you intend on going high up on any mountains there, you check the climate data. The volcanoes on the Big Island are high enough that they can be cool or even cold (they even get snow on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea) during the day, and even more so after sunset. The highest peak on Maui is also high enough that the temperature can be in the 50s at the summit during the day.
But there are trade-offs in bringing along warmer clothes in your luggage since obviously you won't have much use for any warm clothes anywhere lower elevation on the islands and they're bulkier than warm weather clothing.
*I did, apparently, go along the road to Hana as a baby.

Re: Anyone know anything about Honolulu, Hawaii?
Just like ES I’ve only been to the big island once many years ago. *looks up Honolulu* well fuck it’s not even on the big island, shows you how much I know! Kauai is my island of choice and if you were going there I would have some advice for you. Kauai is the super chill surfer and hiker island so I’m not sure how much of it translates to the bigger cities (That Lilo and Stitch wasn’t just set on Kauai but got their everyday culture right may have played into my enjoyment of the film). There you can find some great stuff just by chatting with locals at small businesses and food shacks. Hanging around and sharing stories can easily lead to the ‘friends and family’ discounts or advice on where to go for the choice whatever, waves, trails, beaches, marijuana, etc.
The Polynesian cultural center is quite fascinating when understood as a Polynesian ‘itsa small world’ ride as viewed through the conquering LDS. Speaking of, get your mormon the flash mormon underwear gang signs around and see what special treatment you can get, Hawaii is semi secretly run by the LDS.
And mahalo for removing your shoes.

Re: Anyone know anything about Honolulu, Hawaii?
I was on Oahu but in Tripler Army Hospital for most of it. I did get out a few times. It's a big pink building up on the mountainside, you'll probably see it. Well, it was pink, maybe they repainted. I went to Honolulu but just walked around and I think ate at a Korean place. Rented a car, went for a few rides around the island and into the interior a little. Did go to Diamond Head I think, but couldn't swim, but it was a cool view. It's like a high point overlooking a bay. Ate local fast foods but I can't really remember what it was, except it was ok. Just did what I usually do in new places, try to find out what life must be like for the locals.

Much of the pineapple grown now is a low-acid variety, plus getting it fresh and ripe from the field REALLY makes a difference.

Re: Anyone know anything about Honolulu, Hawaii?
So the trip is getting closer and has been expanded... I mean once you are on that side of the world you might as well see a few more places - like Bora Bora, Tahiti, Australia and New Zealand.
So the 10 day Hawaii trip is now 1 month South Pacific adventure involving ships and shit.
The Mor-Man wants to do this trip with one carry on and no checked luggage
I'll keep you posted.

Re: Anyone know anything about Honolulu, Hawaii?
Oh yeah, if you need to fill in any time, consider taking a bus ride. They have decent public trans and it's a good opportunity to kind of eavesdrop on the locals. People actually talk on buses over there, if I remember right.

You honestly probably can get away with a wardrobe consisting of mostly bathing suits and sarongs, and a couple warm layers for nights.

And if you do need extra clothes, you can always buy them from shops on the islands.

He might not be aware that girls often need to carry girl stuff so at least one small case... He's probably thinking beat the line at the baggage carrousel.
Ships have onboard laundry facilities at a cost per item, sometimes with a fill the bag sale.
