I had to get a new phone, and it's really driving home why I hate getting new phones. The sheer volume of bloatware and spyware and just plain annoying apps I never asked for and don't want, constantly sending notifications. And every time I think I've got it cleaned up and permissions sorted in the lowest deep a lower deep, still threatening to devour me, opens wide.

Do people, like, leave these things as is? Just let all these random apps track everything they're doing, and constantly send them notifications either advertising something or just nagging them about stuff?

I hate this thing so much.

(I'm still deciding whether to put a custom ROM on it, but I just want to make sure everything is physically working first in case I have to return it.)

Also, manufacturers/carriers should have to advertise how much of the supposed storage space is taken up by 'system apps.'

I don't pay much attention to it on my iPhone but I always decline to allow notifications and click "ask app not to track" when I install an app, and I never seem to get bothered by notifications I don't want (or at least when they pop up they're not too intrusive and/or I know how to turn them off easily enough.) I've been getting a couple spam texts every day about TV shows ("Shark Tank" in particular) via SMS and always from a different number so I don't seem to be able to stop that.

Weird how instead of developing tools to stop spam we just stop answering the phone instead.

Okay.

My washing machine packed up while still full of water. I checked all the fuses, external and internal - all okay. Power is getting to the main control panel, but it appears dead. The bearings have been making a lot of noise lately anyway - sounds like a jet aircraft taking off when on the spin cycle. Not worth fixing then - time for a new machine. :spend:

So I dragged it outside, opened the machine door to drain the water and put the wet, soapy clothes in a basket to deal with later.

Now I have to deal with the problem that most new machines are deeper than my old one, and won't fit in the space where the old one lived. I either have to buy one of the rarer smaller machines or do some plumbing to fit new water supply and drain in a different part of my kitchen/laundry room.

My beloved husband managed to break a non-glass part of a window while trying to clean it, specifically a single zinc cam in a small, usually invisible part called the coil balance shoe pivot lock. It was not a big deal but made the window not so reliable at staying open, and thus not so useful.

The issue was easy to diagnose, but in order to find a replacement part, I had to remove the whole apparatus, which was more difficult than it should have been. I managed to slice my thumb open on an incredibly sharp piece of vinyl, which did not help my mood. After I got it off, I was delighted to see that it did not have any part number or identifying information whatsoever. At first I thought maybe I could just go to Home Depot and get a replacement for the zinc cam itself, but after a few minutes of searching I concluded that this was not any kind of standard furniture-type cam, and would not be interchangeable with them because of the size and how it pivots based on the locking screws on the sides of the window. Thus, the whole component needed to be replaced.

So I spent a while eyeballing replacement parts on google and trying to match them up based entirely on appearance and dimensions. I finally settled on what I decided to be the closest I could get, available on exactly one website that sells exclusively parts for replacement windows. I went ahead and ordered two it was flat rate shipping and they were only like four bucks each. They arrived today, so I went to attach the part to these tensioned coils that unwind/rewind as the windows go up and down. This looks like it should literally just be removing one screw, swapping in a new part, and replacing the screw, but it took me like 10 minutes of cursing.

But now it's fixed and the stupid fucking window works fine again.

Similar thing happened to us when we got our first replacement hot water heater after new efficiency standards increased the insulation requirement. Now the closet door won't *quite* close.

I like to reuse water/juice bottles a few times before I recycle them, both to get more use out of them and because as nice as many reusable bottles are, I like having no attachment to it, that if needs be I could just toss it or forget it somewhere and not care.

I also really like the Cucumber Lime Gatorade, and am a sucker for most cucumber flavored drinks.

Anyway my problem today is that whatever gatorade’s cucumber lime flavoring is, it’s flavored the plastic bottle to the point that any water put in gets hint of cucumber lime, even after cleaning out the bottle. While not horrible it’s rather unnerving to have water taste lightly like cucumber lime when it’s not supposed to.

My bottle-related first world problem is that as all single-use beverage containers sold here locally are deposit bottles and cans, pretty much all of them get recycled in collection automats that give you your deposit back, and I have therefore developed a sense of that that is the way - and the only way - of disposing of of them. Now I had a bottle bought in the UK that has no deposit and needs to be - gasp - put into plastic recycling.

I have anxiety. :hyperventilate:

Flying back to the UK to recycle it there is the environmentally-conscious thing to do.

My special, extra-large Christmas-themed coffee mugs that I break out at Christmas are too big to fit on my normal-sized coasters.

If you're running Windows 11, you can magnify a single app by going into the compatibility settings for it. I don't know if it will work if you're running Windows 10 like a hobo.
