Re: Nachooooooooooooooooo!
The trifecta is complete, Deadwood Season 3 starts Sunday night, Prairie Home Companion movie opens tomorrow, and Nacho Libre make the theaters next week. Life doesn't get much better than that.

So, I'm the only one who thinks Nacho Libre looks like proof positive that Jack Black has jumped whatever passes for a shark in movies?

Jumping the shark is when a series or movie deviates from it's original premise. e.g. A quite realistic sci-fi series that ends up having psychics and Neptune make a show in season two(seaQuest DSV, I'm looking at you) Honestly, what about the movie's premise is so terrible that a *comedy* movie can't be about it? Talking CGI toys and animals, stoners, and hobbits are ok things to have movies about, but not an orphanage in Mexico and luchadores...

Nah, it's just when a once-good series passes its peak yet continues to zombie on as a shadow of its former self. Deviation from the orignal premise can be one reason, but there are others.

There's nothing necessraily awful about the movie's premise. I was talking about Jack Black, really, not the movie itself. At one time, he had a lot of secondary parts in really good flicks, but then he started getting leading roles (ugh... Shallow Hal), and his schtick has worn thin after overexposure, for me anyway. There's nothign particularly bad about the premise of Nacho Libre, I just don't need to see Jack Black jumping around actiing like Jack Black for an hour and a half...I've already seen him do that.

I liked School of Rock. I will probably like Nacho Libre.

Re: Nachooooooooooooooooo!
I always thought "jumping the sharks" referred to the sitcom Happy Days, when Fonzie jumped the shark tank. It means that a show has run out of ideas, and crossed into the realm of the absurd.

Re: Nachooooooooooooooooo!
There is a real life basis for this movie. Fray Tormenta is a Mexican priest who had a 23 year long career in lucha libre (Mexican professional wrestling). If you've ever watched lucha libre on Telemundo, you'll already recognize some of Nacho Libre's opponents in the ring, or so I'm told.

Yah, that's the genesis of the term. It's sort of expanded in usage to mean any show that's past it's peak. The semi-official website ('semi-official' as in 'they registered the domain name first', of course) has a blurb at the top that's unfortunately part of an image so I can't copy/paste.

Re: Nachooooooooooooooooo!
Jack Black just grates on my nerves. I didn't even like his V/O work in the first Ice Age flick. Something about him is just supremely annoying, moreso than any comedy actor since Pauly Shore.

Well, there's a simple solution to this that wouldn't involve depriving people who like Jack Black of seeing a movie staring him: don't see it. I don't like looking at obese homoerotic hentai, but I wish not that it wouldn't be made; there's people who really like it.

Re: Nachooooooooooooooooo!
How am I depriving anyone of seeing the movie by expressing my opinion about Jack Black's career? Is everyone who reads this going to skip the movie because they're too embarrassed to see a movie that someone as intelligent and tasteful as I doesn't want to see or something?

You're not. I suppose I must have accidentally put words in your mouth. See, when I complain about something jumping the shark that means that I wish it didn't happen. I really liked the show seaQuest and that it jumped the shark irritated me, still does. I wish they hadn't done it. I wish the series had stayed good to it's roots from begining to end. Perhaps I've worked myself into a trap though: since I'm sure there are people that like those shark jumping episodes of it that I loath. Hmmm.
I'd venture to say that I'm just as intelligent as you, maybe even more so. I was tested to have an IQ of 145 years ago. Define "tasteful". Why is my, Ding's and Julie's taste any less tasteful than your's? If I like chocolate ice cream while you don't, does that mean I and chocolate ice cream are untasteful?

Doesn't bother me in the least that you don't like Jack Black.

I've been told Cars has so many auto mechanics inside jokes in it that it is even funnier for those "in the know".

I have all the intelligence and taste of your average Cro Magnon. I was making a smartassed comment poking fun at the idea that my opinion had the power to deprive others of the opportunity to see a movie.
Apparently, my superior intellect and taste aren't intimidating enough to scare Dingfod off, though...

No, I'm too stupid to be swayed by other people's opinions. Just like everything else in my life, I have to learn the hard way, experience it myself.

I am utterly unexcited by Nacho Libre.
I don't intend to see it, unless I hear very good things about it.

Honestly, JP, you may have a high IQ but it seems you don't have anything resembling a sense of humour.
