Anyways, just bamping to tell you that it snew this morning, but we can't take the swamp cooler down yet because it's supposed to be back in the upper 80s by Sunday.

I think we should win something. A baked Alaska, maybe.

61ºF was the high today, which beats the old record low high temperature by 7ºF, set in 2008, which itself beat the previous record of 74ºF, set in 1968. It's 58ºF at 5:something PM. In other words, nice, just like I like it.

Today, it's 88. That's the first day in nearly two weeks that it's been below 90; temperatures for the past 5 days have been 100, 106, 104, 108, and 101. Some of the schools in the county even got placed on minimum schedule.

Rain! Long time in coming and all the locals are flexing their webs thanks to the moisture. We certainly need more overcast and more rain. The days before the rain were marred by smoke from the local forest fires (a suburb had some evacuations due to a forest fire).

It's been raining every day for over a week now. The Gay Area, and California in general, needs it desperately (and that's everybody's refrain around here - "Wow, this rain, huh? "Yeah, but we sure need it," repeat x250 each day). But damn. We were supposed to have a one-day break yesterday, but it only stopped for the first half of the day, then hit again in time for the evening commute. This morning it went from the steady showers we've been getting to a torrential downpour. At least it's not windy. Horizontal rain is a pain in the arse.

I'm certainly glad to hear that Gay Area is getting rain. Snow in the Sierras, too, I hope. It sure needs it.

It was 70 and sunny here yesterday, but then the weather gods were like, "Oh wait, it's December" and dropped us back down to the mid-40s and overcast.

Yesterday morning, it was about 15 and it's almost 70 right now.

I should be used to that sort of thing because it happens here a lot, but it's still really disconcerting and it's kind of challenging to dress appropriately.

Here in California we finally got some rain, not enough to make much of a dent in the drought, but at least we aren't further in the hole. Oh and a good bunch of your food depends on us having water.

It's 2 F but -29 with the windchill. We're supposed to have a balmy -1 for a high tomorrow.

Typical for this time of the year. South Australia and Victoria are on fire for the past week. Queensland and the Northern Territory are under water. And now there are flood warnings for Western Australia. Whatever, top temperatures are bobbling about the 40°C mark.

So far the fires were relatively small scale. A couple of dozen homes burnt down and less than 100,000 hectares of land. Most importantly, neither fires nor floods have caused human fatalities so far this year.

Some of us are so used to this shit we get a bit blasé about it. Here's a pic of a cricket game in some country town some years ago.



The players are not eyeing the fire. They are wondering if the ball is going to make it to the boundary. The game had to be abandoned a bit later due to lack of visibility caused by the smoke. Also, because the cricket field itself started to burn. The fire got to within two metres of the pitch.

I don't share that kind of equanimity.

It's dry as a tinder box here, the whole countryside could catch fire easily. But, it's cold enough you won't see any brass monkeys out and about.

The 20 F we have now is forecast to be the high with temps dropping throughout the day. Windchill this afternoon may be around -11 F.

The low pressure front finally arrived from Western Australia around midday yesterday. 30 millimetres of rain in two hours doused every bushfire in South Australia and Victoria.

We nearly set a barometric pressure record yesterday, 31.00 inches Hg (1049.78 mB). The all-time record for Oklahoma is 31.08 inches Hg (1052.49 mB) set in 1962.
