I'd vote for my grandfather's lack of any on grounds of its utility. It made it so much easier to chase and exterminate lice, fleas and suchlike pests. One thing I never thought to ask before he died, is if he shaved his pubes as well.

Interestingly, on a forum for Bears, I recently got into a discussion with a man who collects 19th century photos of men with beards. He hopes to make his collection into a book someday.
