I do sometimes wonder if it’s because it was the new high tech weapon for soldiers when they were kids given the AR-15 was adopted by the military 55 years ago, making it the weapon every 65-70 year old saw in combat as a teenager.
I heard/read/something'd that it's because it's simply inexpensive. That lead to it being highly modular and ubiquitous which leads to lots of parts and such as well as ease of personalization and simplicity for garage builders to make them.
From my understanding based on the youtubes one of the main design goals of the Ar-15 was to reduce/concentrate all the pressure and load baring parts so that everything else can be made out of lightweight inexpensive polymers.
Separating the components that needed to be forged and milled from everything else means everything not containing pressure can be made to less strenuous standards or better yet out of fancy lightweight metals like aircraft grade aluminum or titanium.
It’s a bit like the 3d printed guns where the instructions start with finding a metal tube, steel springs and a forged steel breach block, and then you’re ready to print a gun.
Thread sent me off on a tangent... the standard issue rifle when I was in the Army was the M16/A2, but apparently it became the M4 in the 2000's. Now it's going to be something called the X5 for unclear reasons, and will only cost $4.5 billion and take 10 yrs to adopt.

Capitalistic reason number one, the military cartridge is a tri-metal construction designed to hold significantly more pressure allowing for higher power, flatter shooting projectiles, it’s also proprietary and made for these weapons only allowing for a pretty monopolistic control over the price and manufacture of the military cartridge (which isn’t available to civilians).

This is the point where we say they’re a bunch of libtards for thinking the Ar-15 is an automatic rifle, and if they knew anything at all about firearms they should know no US citizen can freely own an automatic weapon without tax and registration. (That’s apparently A-OK and I’m sure it has nothing to do with the fact it makes many automatic weapons worth more than a car).
