Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
getting a temporary reprieve from winter for a few days, its actually supposed to get above freezing this week.
not that I care, I'm flying to Cuba Monday morning, where its 30°C and sunny today. I've got the doctors OK to go, I just have to watch what i eat on resort. I have bought extra travel/medical insurance just in case.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
It's actually in the high thirties and rain right now, down from 42 this morning. I was worried that my basement would flood with the snow melting off and the rain. That's what caused my only basement flood a few years back. But the rain is light and the temps aren't high enough to melt all the snow, so I think it will be OK. Have to check when I get home from work.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
Monday' top temperature was 40°C. Yesterday it got to 46. The prediction for today is another 46, 44 tomorrow and 41 on Friday. Fuck off already, summer.
Last week I told my boss that I won't be turning up for work this week until the air conditioning unit and the fan of the truck he has me driving have been repaired. So far, I have not heard back. Looks like I'm having a week off. Currently I'm seriously considering not going back at all.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
Today we are in a wind warning. Expected winds in the 40 mph range with gusts of 60 mph (96.56 something something kilometers per hr).
EF0 tornadoes have 65–85 mph winds.
So basically today is an EF(-1) tornado day.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
Light snow, probably not enough to have to shovel but enough to make the roads really slick with the ice that's already on there. I'm not looking forward to my drive home.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
Polar Vortex II.
-3F this morning with -20+ windchills.
Sunday was nice. About 40 F higher than today. I hate the yo-yo stuff. It's supposed to be 40+ then back down again over the week.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
We're getting sloppy seconds of polar vortex here in NE Oklahoma, the temperature dropped 46 degrees overnight. Yesterday's high was 62ºF, right now it's 19ºF, up from a low of 16ºF. Tomorrow, 40-something again, just teaser before the plunge to single digits Friday morning.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
How do people live in Canada if this is the weather up there?
Our state is one of those in the propane shortage.
AAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
My parents use propane in a big tank by the house. But there's only 2 of them so they shut off the house upstairs in the winter and normally can get by without refilling too often. But they're old so they grew up without heat and stuff at the end of the depression. It's probably 45-50 F in their house now anyway because heat costs too much. Just like AC was set to 85 and turned on if the temps got above 100 F, when I was a kid. And the AC didn't go upstairs to our rooms because kid's don't need AC.
I'm not sure if my furnace is operating correctly because of the amount of people using natural gas all out. The house was 60 this morning before I got the furnace to turn back on. There's a big millionare subdivision to the north of us with huge window mansions that probably gets first dibs on the gas.
I may need to install a wood stove like the people in Alaska if this crap keeps up and all my neighbors hog the heat.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
The typical domestic gas meter regulator is set at 4 ounces per square inch, or a 0.25 psi (pounds per square inch). The gas mains upstream typically have over 100 psi. Unless there is so much domestic use in the line that the whole line gets down to your 4 ounce setting, there is no way anyone in your neighborhood is causing you to get less natural gas. And it is unlikely that the gas company would let the lines get that low. That said, I worked in the control center of a LDC (Local Distribution Company) during a number of subzero cold blasts, and there were places where it got pretty close to critical. But, we never lost anybody's home heating, or schools either, because we would cut off industrial use, businesses, even churches before we would let that happen. Schools and hospitals didn't get cut off because they could serve as emergency shelters in case we did lose domestic gas service. It just never happened in the 20+ years I've been doing this, and nobody ever heard of in the 20-30 years before that either.
It is possible, however, for your gas meter or regulator to freeze. The problem is usually the air vent on the regulator getting frozen over. If the air vent is plugged, the diaphragm inside cannot move to allow enough gas in to supply the set pressure. The vent screen is right where this person is pointing, make sure it is clear:

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
I was more than a little concerned by the huge bump in usage this January over last January. I know it's been extra cold and I had more time off for the holidays, but damn! then I remembered last year I was in Britain for nearly three weeks with my furnace turned down for the duration. Makes it look a bit better.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
A freeze in the vent can cause a worse problem: too much gas.

Re: How's the fucking weather where you are?
I found my problem. There's a switch on the furnace which goes to the fan and according to all the wires some other electrical do-dads. I touched said switch and the furnace turned on. I untouched it and it went off. I touched it left and up and nothing. I touched it right and up and it turned on. All in the on position. Loose power switch. It must jiggle with the fan and not always engage to turn everything on.
So the furnace tries to start, stops, tries to start, jiggles the switch and starts, or doesn't and gives up. In the warmer days, missing a cycle or two doesn't drop the house temperature. On -3 F days with 30-40 mph wind the temp plummets.
I fixed it with ducky tape like all good country folk would when they are out of baling wire. Now said switch is up and to the right by force. I'll call a guy out to look at it and the AC in the spring when they aren't so busy as to charge me an arm and a leg for a service call.

LOL @ you guys.
It's 63F here right now. I'm thinking I kind of don't even want to make soup and bread for dinner like I'd planned, because it's too hot.

GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then back to 0 F on Monday night.
Global crisis averted.

Snowcover for Northern Wisconsin
i live on the bay on the south shore of the lake, between the 26" and 35" of snowpack
(my inseam is 28" .... so when i step off any of the snowshoe trails, the access to the outbuildings, the snow is mid-thigh)
it will be -17 F this evening with a windchill near -33... bizarrely, the temp will SOAR to 28 on friday... and then back to daytime high temps hovering in the single digits above and below zero until a week from thursday....
it is fucking cold, it is fucking windy, it is fucking snowy... what they call winter in these parts....

Are we having fun yet?
Seriously, my driveway is covered with snow and when it is very cold (well below freezing) I can get up the hill because I can get traction. If it warms up the snow melts enough to glaze over and becomes a sheet of ice. So for me, either stay cold, or warm up enough to completely melt everything off my drive.
