it does seem extreme, more like the '96 event where we recorded -42 on the thermometer here in the 'burn ... on Feb 2 of that year the little town of Tower, in northern Minnesota was purported to be the "coldest place on earth" for one glorious moment, reporting -74 reading at an observer site

That television station might be using the old outdated wind chill factor calculation. The Weather Service revised the formula in 2001, reducing the effect. It's hardly scientific anyway, that's why my local source of news and weather calls it the Feels-Like™ index.

It was a balmy +2ºF outside when I fed and watered the horses. We have about two inches of snow on the ground. The side roads are all slicker than Astrolube on a knob, so school has been cancelled for today, maybe again tomorrow too. However, it is sunny today, so the roads may clear considerably. Plus, it's only supposed to get down to 7ºF tomorrow morning, then skyrocket to 40+ºF. So, I'm betting there will be school tomorrow, thank goodness and any gods that may or may not exist.

Gawd our kids are soft and squishy. They cancelled school here because kids are too stupid to wear a coat. Missed an important teaching moment there.

My mother claims that when I was a baby, she dropped me into a snowbank and had to dig me out. Since then, she claims, I've never felt cold.


It was -20 according to the thermometer a little while ago; goodness knows what the wind-chill was. So naturally, I thought it'd be a good night to go out owl-hunting. Alas, the owls apparently had more sense than I, and none responded to my calls. Probably a good night to be hunkered up in a hollow tree somewhere.

I must admit that even I felt a bit chilled.

A couple hours ago I stepped out to go get some coffee and a bite. I checked my phome to see what the temperature was and it said 8°(F). I thought I could handle that. I mean, a couple of days ago it was about that and I did alright. Sure, it was cold and it took me maybe fifteen minutes to clear the snow and ice of the car, but it was tolerable. What my phome didn't tell me is that there's a 26mph wind a-blowin. According to Weather.com, that means it feels like -17°F outside. For those of you among us who have the great fortune to not know what that feels like, let me assure you: It is mother fudgin cold. A could you cannot believe is possible.

They canceled school today because with the wind chill it's in single digits. At first I was like "WTF? I went to school in below 0 temps"...yeah I did. In Colorado. Kids in CO have multiple warm coats and mittens and hats and scarves and boots and shit. Not here.

I realized my kid has a dozen swim trunks, but nothing warmer than a fleece jacket. He does not have a single entire set of gloves (he wore mismatched hand me downs from CO out to the store last night). Other kids are probably even worse off. Also, our buildings are hurricane proof, but not winterproof. Kiddo's school is almost 100 years old. I expect some frozen pipes and shit. So all in all a good thing I guess.

I insulated a dog carrier into a warm cave for porch kitty, and put pine straw in a protected corner against the house for the goats. I ran the dryer most of the night too to vent out back for them. Although I hear the goats should be fine even in srsly frigid temps, ours just aren't used to such nonsense.
