Could not find a way to not guess sort of near the end.

I'm starting to suspect, given that we periodically get a puzzle where everyone has guesses, that the solver is somehow generating unsolvable puzzles, or at least, puzzles that require a technique not available to us humans.

ceptimus will undoubtedly enlighten us, but many algorithms to check a Sudoku puzzle has a unique solution use backtracking ... i.e. guessing.

The puzzle generator is very naive. It first generates a valid solved grid, then reveals a fixed number of squares, 32 I think, chosen at random, as green clues. It then solves the puzzle, just using the green clues: most often, it finds multiple solutions. It then adds a yellow clue, choosing one square, chosen at random, in which the multiple solutions differ. Then it tries to solve the puzzle again, using the extra information provided by the yellow clue. As long as it finds multiple solutions, it continues to add extra yellow clues until it finds only one solution - then it stops.

The resulting puzzles sometimes have no yellow clues at all, and sometimes lots of yellows. Some are very easy, and some can't be solved without guessing and backtracking - or possibly by knowing some very advanced Sudoku techniques that none of us know.

In one sense, that's a defect of the puzzle, but it also makes it different to normal vanilla sudoku by adding an element of strategy: you have to decide when it's a good time to make a guess, and calculate the best location to guess so as to minimise the chance of the guess being wrong while maximising the information provided when the guess is marked.

I don't recall EVER encountering a Sudoku puzzle in which I did not need to make a couple of guesses. Maybe once or twice over the years.
It may be as much the way my brain work (or doesn't) as anything.

I have to say that this particular format has helped me greatly improve my game, but there are still a few WAGs, now and again.

In most sudoku puzzles, I don't find myself guessing, but I do sometimes find myself reasoning through "if this is here, then ..." type things to rule things in or out.
