On Twitter, Kenneth Casaday, the president of the Austin police officers’ union, retweeted a video clip of Mr. Foster explaining to Mr. Garcia, the independent journalist, why he brought his rifle. In the clip, Mr. Foster is heard using curse words to talk about “all the people that hate us,” but are too afraid to “stop and actually do anything about it.”

In his tweet, Mr. Casaday wrote: “This is the guy that lost his life last night. He was looking for confrontation and he found it.”

Yeah, even if you frame it in the ugliest way the facts support it looks like this:

1. Garrett had a chip on his shoulder and an assault rifle (sounds like a lot of MAGAs...)
2. Driver accelerated aggressively into crowd of protestors w/ gun at his fingertips
3. Protestors surrounded car and thumped on it, Garrett aimed his rifle at driver
4. Driver shot Garrett 3 times, started driving away
5. Another bystander took a few shots at the car; no damage reported
6. Driver turns himself in, gets released pending "further investigation"

Based on everything I've seen this seems like the most objective interpretation of events and looks to me a lot more like that driver was looking for an opportunity to kill a protestor "in self defense" and found it.


P.S. I didn't attend the vigil because I'm still avoiding Covid, but I was able to see it from my balcony and I watched live coverage on the news. The intersection where Garrett was killed is 2 blocks from my apartment.

The Douglas County, Nev., public library wanted to take a stand this week: “Everyone is welcome,” read a proposed diversity statement, which added the library “denounces all acts of racism, violence and disregard for human rights. We support #BlackLivesMatter.”

But Douglas County Sheriff Daniel Coverley quickly took a stand of his own.

“Due to your support of Black Lives Matter and the obvious lack of support or trust with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, please do not feel the need to call 911 for help,” Coverley wrote in a letter to the library published Monday. “I wish you good luck with disturbances and lewd behavior.”

Widespread lying about Fourth Amendment violations is at least as old as the exclusionary rule itself. The Supreme Court applied this rule nationwide in 1961’s Mapp v. The Police Lie All the Time

In New York City, prosecutors keep secret databases of unreliable police officers, though only two boroughs actually prohibit those officers from taking the stand. Without further reforms, however, this approach fails to address the underlying problem: Prosecutors are reluctant to accuse officers of lying in the first place, or to investigate an officer’s claims to learn if they align with reality. As a result, an officer who lies convincingly can evade the list indefinitely.

Note that they arent punished, just prosecutors try to not use them as witnesses.

There's a lot of hate and outright racism from long time Clayton residents due to the rapid gentrification of the city of Atlanta and subsequent relocation of its poorest people. People were pretty much forced to relocate as housing projects were destroyed before the '96 Olympics to "clean up the city".
