tsk tsk. Leprechauns are Irish. The Dutchland equivalent is probably gnome or kobold or kabouter.

UPDATE: It looks like the poisoning happened after they got home, so it was probably a deranged neighbor or something. It's still terrible, but it sounds like the other reported poisonings were mostly just panic, which is good.

By Day 2 of the American airstrike campaign against militants holed up in Tikrit, the mission appeared beleaguered on several fronts on Thursday: Thousands of Shiite militiamen boycotted the fight, others threatened to attack any Americans they found, and Iraqi officials said nine of their fighters had been accidentally killed in an airstrike.

Not really sure where to put this, so.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid won't seek re-election in 2016. He has endorsed Chuck Schumer to replace him.

Schumer wouldn't be bad but my top choices are definitely Senator Professor Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders (though he's not technically a Democrat). Al Franken and Sherrod Brown would also be good choices.

ETA: After reading stuff from Greenwald on Twitter about Schumer's ties to Wall Street and AIPAC I definitely don't want Schumer to be Reid's replacement. Sanders is probably ideal but I'll take Warren too.

Edit 2: Mother Jones suggests we should be rallying behind Patty Murray.

ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra (al-Qaeda in Syria) have joined forces to attack the Yarmouk refugee camp which is very close to Damascus.

State Of Syrian Refugee Camp Under ISIS Attack Is 'Beyond Inhumane,' UN Official Says

ISIS still has NEVER attacked Israel, but it has attacked pretty much everyone else in the region: Turks, Kurds, Yazidis, Assyrians, Alawis, Turcomen, Sunnis, Shi'ites, Druzes, Christian Orthodox, Maronites and now Palestinians. But never Israel. Or Israeli embassies or other Israeli interests. And we also know Israel has been treating wounded JaN fighters and supplying them. Probably all a coincidence though.

North Korea executed its defense chief by putting him in front of an anti-aircraft gun at a firing range, Seoul's National Intelligence Service told lawmakers, which would be the latest in a series of high-level purges since Kim Jong Un took charge.

Hyon Yong Chol, who headed the isolated nuclear-capable country's military, was charged with treason, including disobeying Kim and falling asleep during an event at which North Korea's young leader was present, according to South Korean lawmakers briefed in a closed-door meeting with the spy agency on Wednesday.
