Marvel Studios casts black actress as Mary Jane Watson. Response is, predictably, stupid and racist. Much of the objection seems to stem from the fact that Mary Jane Watson has red hair, which ignores the fact that there are, in fact, black people with naturally red hair, as well as that such things as hair dye exist. But, of course, the depth of the character goes far beyond her hair colour. The piece I linked here goes into some of it.

Personally, I feel that as long as they don’t do something as stupid as the OMD plotline it’ll be several orders of magnitude better than this century’s treatment of the character has been.

It’s possible that some of this is due to Drumpf, but Beck has been softening his stance on racial issues for awhile. In 2014, in response to the refugee crisis from Central America he stated that we need to be more charitable towards immigrants, including undocumented ones, and he actually backed this up by donating quite a substantial amount of food, water, and toys to help 60,000 refugees in McAllen, TX (between his own contributions and the charity he endorsed this resulted in about $2 million worth of aid, apparently). This got him death threats because of course it did. Unfortunately, I can’t find a piece on this that isn’t slanted or incomplete in some way but here’s one that has a sampling of quotes from his batshit supporters and here are a couple of others. He was also apparently quite critical of Cliven Bundy and his cohort of useful idiots. Some of this may be due to stopped clock syndrome, but I do think he's actually getting marginally less kooky, because I can’t imagine him doing or even saying something like this even five years ago.

Ding: that poll is encouraging but it’s not as recent as the paper thought it was. Drumpf unfortunately has a fairly substantial lead in UT again in most current polls. However his margins in other states, such as AZ, GA, and SC, are razor thin. Some of this is due to demographic changes (AZ has a much larger Hispanic/Latino population than it used to, while GA and SC have much larger African-American populations), but some of it is because Drumpf is an objectively terrible candidate.

Dressing like a Nun is fine, just so long as it's not a Muslim nun.

The Mayor of Nice has made it quite clear, the burkini is banned because "The burkini is the uniform of extremist Islamism, not of the Muslim religion.” But was not banning “the veil, the kippa or the cross."

What makes this an extra bit of sexism to go along with their prejudice is that the Burkini isn't even an article of 'extremist Islam' as extremist Islam forbids women from attending the same beach as a man. These women are actively choosing to wear these outfits based on their personal faith. So basically the French government has decided to protect muslim women from controlling men telling them what they can wear by having a bunch of controlling men tell them what they can wear.

France of all places should know what happens when an uncaring government starts deciding they know what's best for their people.
