I designed the labels for custom releases of Unix SVR4.2 we distributed on floppies. (It was a really small company with no graphic designer, so they made me do it because I'd gone to art school once.)

And I didn't read all the answers, but did anyone point out that the internet was around well before the 90s?

In '84, I was part of a team installing IBM XT's in computer science lab at a Community College in North Carolina.
They were the newest thing, with two 5.25 in. floppy drives, and 128 K of memory.

One of the instructors was watching us, and pondered aloud, "What is anyone going to do with 128 kilobytes of memory?"

We also tested the pcs and the local network by connecting to the IBM lab in Poughkeepsie, and playing "LEM" and "Star Trek".

Somebody pointed out they really meant the world wide web. People are always confusing those two.

Oh, I totally did this too. I remember looking up phone numbers for local BBSs in the phone book.

Written Basque may be 1,000 years older than anyone thought | The Economist

Quote:
Shards of pottery often tell historians useful things, but even the geekiest archaeologist would admit they are not very exciting to look at. Not so a discovery in Irulegui, in Spain’s Navarre region, last year: a life-size bronze cut-out of a hand, green with age, with a small hole indicating that it was meant to hang, perhaps over a door. It was found in a village destroyed in a war of the 1st century BC.
Quote:
Still more important is the short inscription, five words in an intriguing script. Experts recognised it as a version of the writing systems used for the now-extinct Iberian and Celtiberian languages, present on the peninsula before the Roman conquest. But this language was neither of those. The researchers were stunned to find that they could make out the first word—in Basque. “Sorioneku”, meaning “good fortune”, was staring the researchers in the face. A descendant of that word, zorionak, is used in the Basque “Happy Birthday” song today.
Quote:
The previous oldest known writing in the language [...] date from the 10th century; Basque writing proper does not really begin until the 16th century.

John Hoopes: Oddly enough—and I know journalists might bristle at what I say—Wikipedia is the very best source. It’s maintained by nerds, and archaeology Wikipedia is maintained by archaeology nerds, and the articles on it are good! I have a feeling they’ll get even better because of this series, because people will want to make sure the information is in there for viewers who may be Googling it.

Good call!

Roman Emperor Sponsian | BBC

From the linkAn ancient gold coin proves that a third century Roman emperor written out of history as a fictional character really did exist, scientists say. The coin bearing the name of Sponsian and his portrait was found more than 300 years ago in Transylvania, once a far-flung outpost of the Roman empire.

Ancient barn conversion with steam room found at Roman villa in Rutland | Roman Britain | The Guardian

Quote:
If you thought barn conversions were a relatively recent development for the property-owning classes, you’d be wrong – probably by 16 or 17 centuries.

Archaeologists at the site of a Roman villa complex in the east Midlands have discovered that its wealthy owners converted an agricultural timber barn into a dwelling featuring a bathing suite with a hot steam room, a warm room and a cold plunge pool.
