It had to happen eventually: Abe Vigoda is dead.
His daughter said he died of old age.

Which is funny, because his character on Barney Miller, Fish, was always sick, and always about to retire.

Dangit!
It's not that I really cared about Vigoda one way or another, other than that I'm sure he was a nice guy and all. But I loved the fact that he just wouldn't die. I wanted him to live to be 200.

I didn't realize he was "only" 94. Dude seemed old 40 years ago.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Paul Kantner dies at age 74.
Quote:
Paul Kantner, one of the giants of the San Francisco music scene, died Thursday. Mr. Kantner, a founding member of the Jefferson Airplane, was 74 and had suffered a heart attack this week.
|
Dude was definitely one of my musical heroes. Even though he was usually not the best singer, nor even guitarist, in the bands he founded (Jefferson Airplane, Jefferson Starship, as well as numerous side projects, notably The Planet Earth Rock-n-Roll Orchestra, Wooden Ships, and various duet projects with Grace Slick), he was the intensity and fire behind all of them, and far and away the most important songwriter. While I was always in love with Grace, if truth be known I was probably even more in love with Paul.
He and his crew were always closely associated with the Dead, originating from the same SF scene at the same time, and sharing tons of gigs with them. But while the Dead always bored me to tears, the Airplane was where it was at, man.
He finally made good on his promise, and made the sky his home.

He also co-wrote a novel with Harry Harrison. While since I read it but I thought it was decent at the time.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
Edgar Mitchell, sixth man on the moon, has died. Apparently there are now only seven living people who have walked on the moon.
Also, it was sort of displaced by the news of Kantner’s death, but original Jefferson Airplane vocalist Signe Toly Anderson (who sang on their first album) also died a few days ago. Tough couple of months for rock fans.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
I guess it was inevitable that an 89-year-old woman wouldn’t live forever, but it’s still pretty bad news with which to start off the day. Bloom County cartoonist Berkeley Breathed had this to say:
Quote:
Bloomers: Many, but not all of you, know that in the way that creative life can often surprise, Harper Lee was one of you. One of us. You might be as surprised as I am that she played a large role in my recent return to the streets of Bloom County– streets inspired by those of Maycomb. When I retired Opus from the Sunday comics some years ago, Harper let me know her displeasure, with all the southern, gracious elegance we knew her for. See the letter below. I’ve waited until her passing to show it. We came to exchange many similar notes… including one in which she grudgingly forgives me for my retirement (irony alert). Imagine my 14 year-old self — freshly savoring the first reading of Mockingbird and sending Miss Lee a fan letter in 1970 — being told about another fan letter returning my way almost 40 years distant. Life is wonderful and strange and wistful and happy at the same time. And I’m happy to share this with all of you today.

Re: BREAKING: Sometimes Famous People Die
I confess to being much more upset about Eco than Lee. Aside from my love of semiotics and his nonfiction work, the fact is he was far more likely to keep publishing than she was.
And only after I posted that did I realize that we got the third Lee, first Christopher, then Tanith, now Harper. I must confess to some relief that it wasn't Jet Li.
