Oh, just noticed how old this thread is. Wondered when I went to the op link and saw:

In a strategy that seemed to surprise many inside the courtroom, one of the lawyers, Michael Orozco, appeared to try to reargue the merits of the underlying gun rights case the judges had ruled on, which coincidentally was argued on appeal before the United States Supreme Court on Tuesday.

“If it’s overturned,” Mr. Orozco asked, “doesn’t that make Hal Turner correct?”

Judge Easterbrook made a blistering response: “This blog post says any judge who decides a case incorrectly is supposed to be assassinated. That is not the way the system works.”
Hal Turner on trial.

The defense lawyers for Mr. Turner questioned the judges aggressively, interrupting their responses, at times mispronouncing their names and earning more than one scolding from Judge Walter about admonishing witnesses.
As if any response, no matter how poorly thought out, could justify death threats. Barring something truly bizarre and as yet unheard of I don't see this ending well for Mr. Turner.

This is a retrial. Apparently his first one ended in a hung jury (for which Turner was not literally responsible). A few years ago, the husband and mother of a district court judge in the Seventh Circuit were actually murdered by a follower of the white supremacist Matt Hale.* Hale is serving 40 years in federal prison for attempting to solicit the murder of the judge herself (unfortunately Hale attempted to engage the solicitation through an undercover FBI agent).

* He obtained a law degree but was refused admittance to the bar.

Actually, everybody thought it was Hale, or a follower, but it turned out to be another loser entirely - who lost a case in which she presided.

It's totally understandable. Hale was the primary suspect until the other guy committed suicide and confessed in his note. Hale was such a *good* primary suspect, too.

I happen to live in the Chicago area, and the news was impossible to avoid.
