Wind power on the rise

According to this NY Times article, US wind power grew a staggering 39 percent last year. That, in spite of the recession, the effects of which won't be felt until the end of this year.

The American Wind Energy Association, in its annual report to be released on Tuesday, said the amount of capacity added last year, 9,900 megawatts, was the largest on record, and was 18 percent above the capacity added in 2008, also a banner year.

So, no of course, it's not a lot, and it's not a full solution to our energy problems, but seeing these results is encouraging. I get the feeling when I read criticisms of this (and other related topics) that the authors of such criticism are looking for a complete replacement ... NOW! Well, that's simply unrealistic. I've been trying to push the point that if we start taking even baby steps towards an alternative solution, the dividends of such change will start coming in sooner. They won't be much at first, but they'll keep growing and this is why it's worth pursuing.

Anyway, just wanted to share this, as I found it an uplifting story.

I just read Portugal is up to 36% reliant on wind and solar energy now, they want to increase that to 45% this year. Wind energy alone they are at 15 percent. Denmark is record holder at 20%, Spain is up to 14%.
