Also, have you been to Mackinac Island, yet? n.n I want to live there and write books. If you haven't seen it - YOU MUST! It is like Michigan's own little Wonderland. And there is a Butterfly House and Fudge and Giant Horses!

Lansing is an odd combination of college town and small capitol city. It is in severe economic trouble right now because most of the jobs here were in the automaking industry. There is almost 20% unemployment here, a ton of home foreclosures and small businesses going bankrupt. Having said all that, it would be a great place to live if the economy straightens up.
I haven't actually been on Mackinac Island but I've been past it a few times. My last work project here in Michigan was to do requirements for software for three of the toll bridges here in Michigan including the Mighty Mac. I know more about bridge operations than I ever dreamed and it's really interesting. I got to go spend a couple of days at the Mac and got a behind the scenes tour. It was a lot of fun.

My mom and dad got about 14 inches of snow, I think we got maybe 8 or so? But we're having close to 50-60 mph winds, and as a result can't see to the end of our driveway, along with single digit temps tonight. Needless to say Malloch did not go to work today.

It's eight below right now, and sapposably, the wind chill puts it around 20 below.
And The Little Muffin is the one this time walking around with no hat! And he was actually WALKING AROUND OUTSIDE and not just driving in a car like Maturin.
Both of their heads are just going to freeze solid and snap clean off!

Serves them right for not listening.
I'm waiting for the electrician to see if we can get out electric system not to fry our furnace, so we can get that fixed sometime.
Probably just in time for global warming to kick in for the rest of the winter.
10º outside, 54º inside. I am very glad we insulated well.

18°F with a wind chill factor of zero degrees Fahrenheit. There must have been a bubble of inert gas or air in the gas lines, the fireplace and the water heater were out when I got up. It was 66°F in the house, but the hot water was still fairly hot, so I figured it hadn't been out long. I turned on a couple of burners on the kitchen stove, they lit okay, so I tried to light the fireplace. It took a little while to get burnable gas at the pilot burner, but eventually it did light. The water heater lit instantly. Weird, the first time this has happened.
The freeze-proof faucet in the barn was frozen. The one outdoors was not, but the short length of hose we use to fill the horse trough was. So it was a one-man bucket brigade this morning. And they're not even our horses. A bucket of hot water from the house thawed the barn faucet, so we're back in bidness.

Qingdai, y'all need to pick up a couple little ceramic heaters while you wait. They're very cheap and one tiny little heater can handle a good-sized room.

The day dried up and went half-decent. The wet ground is still disgusting but the red sky this evening promised a better tomorrow. It's fairly warm - I've just been out locking up the birds without a jacket.

Those worked for us last year when our furnace crapped out on the coldest weekend ever. We got two at Costco and they even let us return one. We kept the other for emergencies.

Ever since last winter when my furnace quit while it was -30 and kill 70% of my snakes I've been a touch paranoid. I now have an assortment of electric heaters a gas generator and about 500 feet of electrical cord for such occasions.
