The Road
I read this book some time ago and loved it, though it was perhaps one of the most depressing things I've ever read. Not that it made me weep, but that it made me feel this sadness so deep inside my bones that I could not even weep.
Now, it's been made into a movie, I'm supposing I'll see it. It's got Viggo Mortensten who is the go-to mainstream guy for good serious movies lately (loved Eastern Promises).
Here's the trailer for The Road. It makes it seem more like a darker, edgier Road Warrior, which it's totally not.
Leastways, the book wasn't.

Re: The Road
I read the book one night and thought it was so-so, but I definitely plan on seeing the movie just because Michael K. Williams (Omar Little) is gonna be in it.

Re: The Road
Here's a bit from an article about production for The Road.
Faint praise for Pennsylvania?
Quote:
Pennsylvania, where most of the filming took place, was chosen for its tax breaks and its abundance of locations that looked post-apocalyptic: coalfields, dunes, and run-down parts of Pittsburgh.

Re: The Road
Looks like they also filmed it in Louisiana and Oregon. Nice to know we also figure in for a post-apocalyptic feel, or tax breaks.
My husband read it, I think that being a father, and a new one at that, with all of the feelings of protectiveness, made it more resonant.

Re: The Road
Yeah. Hmm. I read it, and it was very good but not a novel I would ever read again. Does that make sense? So very dark and broken and despairing a future. Humanity mostly as primal predators and prey, with almost the last vestiges of social contracts and kindnesses stripped away. I sobbed when I got to the last chapter. But then of course I cried when I watched cheesy Deep Impact, very good Children of Men, Last of The Mohicans, and the first few times I read Return of the King, and Orson Scott Card's Songmaster, and... fuck. I guess I cry at the drop of noble self-sacrifice or even the stupid manipulations of music and movie cheese.
Anyway, I'm not going to see it, Omar Little or no. I want to believe that there is more impetus for humans to find common cause than that future Cormac McCarthy depicts. Ironic I guess when we live in a now where most of the world lives on less than 2 bucks a day and people destroy themselves and each other to survive and profit daily, but there it is. Great ending there, too, I depressed myself just writing this.

I did NOT cry during Armageddon. I especially didn't cry when Bruce Willis was saying goodbye to his hot daughter Liv Tyler and then blew up that asteroid with himself on it. It was just smoky in the room. That was the perfect example of a movie where I was angry while uh... upset about the smoke... because those fuckers were clearly manipulating an emotional response out of me to what was clearly over-budgeted cheese, and I was crying...because of the smoke... and also like, WTF? You bastards! With your smoking!
Oh and I did groan and laugh when I noted that the space ATVs had large machine guns to use in space. You know the old adage- better to have a large caliber machine gun in space and not need it, than not have a large caliber machine gun in space and need it.
