Re: New And Improved Rant Thread, now with 50% more profanity!
I WANT THIS INDEXED.
There is a tiny little burrito place about 100 yards from our front door. It's almost entirely a one-woman show, and that woman has had serious health issues in the recent past, so she's got her doors locked and is only taking orders through GrubHub.
Like I said, this is a tiny little place, and the vast majority of her business is from people who live nearby and walk over to pick up their orders to bring home or eat in the parking lot.
Welp, GrubHub for some reason has 'pickup' disabled for her store, and I don't think she knows it. I am not paying an extra $15 on top of the money they skim directly from her to have some poor schlub drive out here to hand me my burritos. (Our city passed a rule limiting the percentage that delivery services can skim off restaurants' prices to 15%, so they're now adding "service fees" and such in our area to "cover their costs" and bring their corporate profits back up to 30-35% or so of restaurant sales, except at least they're getting it from customers now instead.)
She's not picking up her real store number--it's just a message saying to go to their website and order through GrubHub.
And unless it happened in the past couple days, she's not out of business. Yet.
I just can't wrap my head around how fucking evil you'd have to be to come up with a business model like this (or for that matter, Yelp) that profits directly from fucking over little family businesses like this.
Especially now, though. These types of businesses are failing in record numbers. I've seen a bunch of different projections, because nobody knows for sure yet, but a very very large percentage of independent restaurants aren't going to make it out of this pandemic.
Food delivery services are one of the few industries that's stacking all kinds of paper in this pandemic, and they're doing it directly on the backs of some of the most vulnerable. (Not even just restaurants, but also their own underpaid drivers, whose tips are bound to go way down as they add up those stupid service charges.)
This is the kind of thing we had to invent Hell for.
I've been racking my brain, and so far all I can think of is to write her a note to let her know that GrubHub is screwing up her orders, and attach the tip we wanted to give her. If anyone has a better idea, let me know.

I bought a pack of Christmas cards. Some of those on offer had glitter as part of the scene so I carefully didn't select those, instead picking a cute robin on a postbox. With snow of course, all designs have snow.
The first 6 in the pack are the robin design ... the rest have glitter on.
I quickly put the offending cards in a ziploc bag (and they may go into the bin like that). But already the damage is done - I'm finding glitter on my finger (even after washing them for 20s), on my pen and on the other cards. And will continue to find glitter for months.

I need a fucking car loan. I also need a fucking cosigner because of my fucking student loans tipping my debt to income ratio up. And Mr Curses doesn't fucking drive. He doesn't have a fucking driver's license. He now can't be on the title of the fucking car, which means he can't be on the loan. FUCK. Fuckity-fuck fuck I hate banks and loans.

How is that working out for you Ms. New-Used-Car-Owner now?

I'm going to come right out and say it: Nobody even cares about the rules.
Everyone is just going around moving yellow things next to gray things and putting even numbers of pillows on the bed. Talking to me about sports and other minor annoyances right when I wake up. Handing me mail. Using the morning bowls after 5PM.
Re: New And Improved Rant Thread, now with 50% more profanity!
I kinda wanted to make a longer well thought out posts about this but this all makes me a bit irrationally angry, and I think I’ve figured out why.
In short, Doug (The nostalgia critic, a film reviewer in the form of summarization) thinks the film “The Wall” is about how school sucks, and that monsters fought in WW2, then does a cash grabbing FU parody to it while calling it “A love letter to pink floyd.”
It’s not that Doug’s production is horrible, which it is, or his take bad, which it is, but it’s the total self confidence in the most basic surface reading of a film, the complete lack of self awareness, of anyone else’s experience but his own. The sheer smooth brainedness of it all has been making me extra annoyed. To fail so hard at understanding a film while at the same time being so confident in his criticism, while also at the same time advocating for ‘opinions are bad, please like me’ southpark centrism.
Also the whole “They don’t teach us cooking, cleaning or car repair, but they do teach us algebra” gets on my fucking nerves. Because first of all they did fucking teach cooking, it was called Home Economics. Second, Algebra, not calculus or matrices or other specialized math, no, basic algebra is too niche for Slipknot and Doug. The self praise over willful ignorance and whine that things weren’t handed to them on a fucking platter will always be a triggering point for me. To be so happy about being so dumb.
I view this and think “This is why we can’t have nice things” eventually the 18-35 suburban white male demographic will wring all the heart and symbolism out of anything it touches and gives back a literal reading as if it’s not just equal but better than the original they didn’t bother to understand.
45 minutes of raking white male mediocrity over the coals. Folding Idea’s analysis of Doug’s “review” of the wall.

I used to watch some of the people at Channel Awesome a long time ago but not him so much. Then there was some nasty allegations about the management and the people I liked left, then later more left... Seems like it's pretty much just him now.

Oh yeah, I used to watch his reviews/summations of bad 80s kids shows, and found Lindsay Ellis through there but stopped around the time he switch to a different format.
What I didn’t know was just how badly that bombed. It wasn’t just hated by fans, it was a financial disaster as they knew so little about what they were doing that they bought a ‘studio’ that turned out to be not built as a studio and the lack of sound dampening was so bad that they turned it into storage for all their halloween costumes instead still filming in their houses and offices.

Well, as a hater of Pink Floyd, perhaps I ought to check this out.
Re: New And Improved Rant Thread, now with 50% more profanity!
Haha, ok, but I presume you will be checking if there’s a german word for “hating the thing that’s hating what I hate more than the thing that I hate” after. There’s got to be a german word for that, right?
Re: New And Improved Rant Thread, now with 50% more profanity!
I never watched Channel Awesome or the Nostalgia Critic, but of course was aware of them. What I didn't realize was that Dan Olson was once part of Channel Awesome. Actually, I didn't realize that several of my most watched YouTube channels were once part of Channel Awesome.
What I also didn't realize was that Lindsay Ellis was recently the subject of a cancelling on Twitter. As I don't really do anything with my Twitter account, I had no idea any of this was happening. And watching this video, it seems that I am smart for avoiding Twitter.
I really resent how bad faith actors on the Right have weaponized legitimate call outs against people. And how some on the Left need so little goading to turn on one of their own.

Yeah. The thing that drives me nuts is the grain of truth there is to so many of those stupid right wing talking points. There is a toxic, dogpile style of 'callout culture' that happens sometimes. And things like oppression olympics and virtue signaling are fairly decent descriptions of some of the bad faith tactics they use against each other for social capital too. Some of the people doing it are probably concern trolls or plants, but I'm also pretty sure a lot of them are real putatively left-leaning people jockeying for approval and attention, too.
Of course, it's not the same stuff the right is talking about when they use those terms, but the right has always excelled at appropriating and recasting trending terminology, and the left is super-good at totally letting them do it; so I wouldn't be surprised if that's how they got the terms in the first place.
Re: New And Improved Rant Thread, now with 50% more profanity!
I HATE cooking game shows.
The original Iron Chef was fun as a gimmick because it was a new thing, but I fucking LOATHE and HATE and CANNOT STAND any of the stupid offshoot cooking competition shows. They're vile. They're disgusting. They're overwrought and dull and nasty, and they need to fuck the whole entire way off.

I'd lump them together, for sure. I expected to hate it, as I do all cooking, baking, and music competition shows*, but TGGBO is actually delightful rather than angryfying.
*Not including Eurovision, of course, because that is amazing also.
