My employer recently replaced the computer at the desk I'm assigned to. For some reason, they ordered a graphics card to go with it. Why? It's not like what I do requires advanced graphics.

Re: Member News Discussion
Thanks vremya.
I just re-read my post and realized I sounded pretty dispassionate and detached. My sister was 10 when I was born (she was kid #3 and I'm #10) and took a lot of the responsibility for helping to raise me in my early years. She used to play guitar and sing to me, and when I needed a place to live at 16 she and her husband let me move in with them and their young child for a few months. We were very different--she was extremely religious for most of her adult life and the mother of six kids, but she was always very excited to see me when I visited Michigan and would be the first to call when I got there and ask me to call when I got back to Austin safely. I'm also relatively close to all her children and 3 grandchildren. I had dinner at her house the night before Christmas and she handed me a gift bag with a chocolate Santa in it (she had gotten one for each of her siblings) which I ate that night, and that's the last time I saw her alive. The whole thing was quite a gut punch, made more difficult by my having to return to Texas. I was at least able to stay a few extra days; the funeral was on New Years Eve and I was supposed to return on New Years Day, but I stayed a few days more.

Jesus, I hope not. I've been intentionally ignoring that thread for the most part, but I dipped in a few times and saw it had gotten pretty ugly. I didn't realize it was that bad, though.

Posting in Member News does seem like a goodbye to the forum, but we need chunks here. Just as America needs Sanders to continue fighting for what he believes in.

Re: Member News Discussion
I think he took a lot of stuff personally that wasn't meant to be. He also kept making assumptions about some posters' positions, including mine, that just weren't true. I wasn't gracious about it, either, but I do wish he'd realized that none of us disagreed with him to the extent he thought. I get pretty pissed when someone ascribes motives to me that I absolutely don't have, so I returned his "fuck off" with a "fuck off."
I get that the Sanders campaign gave him a feeling of hope and accomplishment that's rare in politics. But elections in the US -- especially Presidential elections -- are an absolute shitshow, and they're a helluva thing to pin one's hopes on. I never wanted to squash his hopes and desire to help people get a fair shake, but he seemed to interpret a lot of comments as such.
I also think it absolutely sucks that we had a couple candidates to feel good about voting for (his was Sanders, mine was Warren), rather than just someone to vote against, and that was yanked away from us. Yet again. And Trump's non-stop stream of poison has made everybody angrier than ever before, including those who keep swallowing it as well as those who hate it. Plus, with the current health crisis (on top of the one we already had), the tension and anger is so thick that it's damned difficult to contain the ugliness. I won't pretend I'm any good at it.

Re: Member News Discussion
Yeah, Warren's poor showings wrecked me because I thought she was the smartest and most capable person in the race by a good stretch, but I decided way beforehand that I'm not baseballing about this election, and I'm voting for whoever has the best chance. I'm trying very very hard not to get too wrapped up in it or fight with people who are on the same side as me. It's not easy at all. I get it.

Re: Member News Discussion
It seems that everyone here was a Warren or Sanders supporter, some who were cool with Harris and some of the other candidates, and no strong Biden supporters. So as far as I can tell, chunks is big mad that we're not big mad that Biden has basically won. I wanted Warren, and would've preferred a number of other candidates over Biden, but I'm not going to sit out the election when Biden's up against Trump.
And Biden's platform is to the left of Hillary's 2016 platform in a number of respects, it's not striking a blow against the party's move to the left, so we do have the possibility of getting some important policy changes if Biden wins and brings a Democratic Senate with him. And there is, of course, the matter of the Supreme Court.
I'm not looking at how Trump's bungling the response to the pandemic and thinking there's no reason to care whether Biden or Trump wins.
chunks supposedly had me on ignore for being a "center-right fool", so unless he was just faking it, I guess it was about the rest of you.

I hope this is just a break and not a so long. I hate to think that chunks would leave now, at a moment when it seems like interaction is more important than usual, and over something like that. His enthusiasm and dedication were evident, and it always seemed like folks agreed much more than they disagreed.

I'm actually kind of mourning this. I consider you guys actual friends, and I'm going to miss the hell out of him here because he's always been one of my favorites, and this is my 'safe space,' as it were.
Please tell him we're going to miss him and that I'm still his friend whether he likes it or not.
And for heck's sake, please you stay around. You're one of my favorites, too, and I am now afraid you'll follow him out.

Re: Member News Discussion
Oh look, more things I haven’t been paying attention too.
Frankly I’m nicely disillusioned with the general governmental process, especially related to congress and the presidency, so I don’t so much as lack anger over Biden but can throw him in with everything else I’m disillusioned with.
I’m sad to see Chunks go and hope he comes back, but frankly the way things have been going, I’m just glad he’s still out there fighting for socialism and not dead, like many other people I’ve known.

Re: Member News Discussion
We ain't dead. I'm not going anywhere, unless I die which only about a 1 in 7 chance if that from my age and coronavirus statistics so far.
Electoral politics seem like a dead end to me.
Lots of storm leading to nothing real. But for real, there is a lot wrong with the US, the US healthcare and the US social network. Me and Chunks are fine for about a year or two. My black friends, those stuck in cages at the boarder, Asians being targeted for racism, service economy workers. NOT SO MUCH

Did they at least say "sorreh"?
Does "when I get back" mean this a temporary lay-off? Guaranteed job when* the isolation period** is over?
* If it ever is
** Or the period of economic worries afflicting your employer, which could be longer
