I second, I mean third, I mean +1 the recommendation for LibreOffice. And the limitations - if you want advanced macro capabilities and compatibility with Excel don't even try. But most of the LibO products are great, and better than Ms's when it comes to styles. Of course, you have to understand and accept the value of styles (instead of direct formatting) to find this useful. Ms Word used to be good at styles but went down the dark path of it being easier to provide features for dumb users than to put actual effort into steering users the right way. Let alone actually providing education.
