Nine-year-old Hilde Kate Lysiak is the sole journalist of Orange Street News, the only publication devoted exclusively to covering the events of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania (population 5,000). Hilde’s favorite beat to report on is crime, and she’s written extensively about vandalism, drug use, and harassment in Selinsgrove. Regular Orange Street News readers know that Hilde often covers serious subject matter that might seem incongruous with her age, but when the nine-year-old was the first reporter on the scene of a murder in Selinsgrove last weekend, some local residents were scandalized.
Last Saturday afternoon, after hearing rumors that police had finally caught a Selinsgrove vandal she’s written about in the past, Hilde headed down to the police station to get confirmation. Instead, Hilde’s father says, the police chief told her “I’ve got a big story, I’ve gotta go.” Hilde consulted with a source she has in the town (the nine-year-old told The Washington Post “I got a good tip from a source and I was able to confirm it”), and learned the police were investigating a murder on Ninth Street, a few blocks from her house. The first reporter to arrive on the scene, Hilde talked to neighbors then went home to write up a breaking news item which her father, a former reporter for The Daily News, put on the Orange Street News for her. She then went back to Ninth Street and gathered enough information to publish a full story, a video, and photos on the site hours ahead of The Daily Item, a local paper which reports on Selinsgrove as well as the rest of Susquehanna Valley.
We have hosted bake sales before, we just wanted this one to have an educational catch: why not educate students about wage disparity while feeding them sugar?
The idea was that each baked good would only cost you the proportion of $1 that you earn comparative to men (or, if you identify as a man, all baked goods would cost you $1). For example, for a woman of colour in the legal profession, a baked good at the stall would only cost you 55 cents.
I love that idea so much I want to hug the people who thought of it. It makes me wish I had a shop of some kind so I could have a sale based on the same principle.
Unfortunately it had the usual backlash of hatred and vitriol from men online
Although some good came of that even:
Quote:
We had students who had previously dismissed the idea of feminism approach us at the bake sale, purchase an item and explain that they “didn’t believe feminism was still needed until reading the comments posted online.”
This could also go in the presidential election thread, but I think it's more relevant here.
It's amazing to me that while they're playing on xenophobia of "Messicans" and "Ayrabs", they end up advocating identical positions to the most conservative mullahs out there. There are also plenty of conservative Islamic scholars who claim that marital rape doesn't and can't exist. The boundary between the two kinds of extremists is so often razor-thin.
Shakezula over at LGM has a nice overview of how the recent transphobic discrimination bills work. As she points out, one of the central points of these bills is to remind minorities that the state can fuck with them at any point they want:
Quote:
Quote:
…some transgender people in the state have stopped using public restrooms altogether. They’re “terrified,” she says, and that’s enough to keep them away even if it means enduring physical discomfort.
Mission accomplished.
Meanwhile, also via LGM, Gabriel Rosenberg in this excellent essay points out that as much as the American Right tries to romanticise the family farm as the wellspring of family values, this myth not only erases the outright genocide and ecological catastrophe upon which such institutions were founded but also ignores the wide variety of sexual arrangements these farms actually produced.
edit: I forgot to respond to erimir’s last post about linguistic stuff earlier, but the discussion had pretty much ceased to have anything to do with the topic of the thread, so I will probably continue it in visitor messages later if I ever get around to replying again, on the off chance anyone else is interested in reading it. I suspect they won’t be. Nothing personal, but I have a lot of other things to do right now so I can’t promise I will get around to it.

Courtesy of Wonkette, here is a batch of horrifying stories from restaurant workers, most of them (naturally) female. Trigger warning for all kinds of assault. The comments (which are not allowed on Wonkette) are well worth reading as well.

New research into our own comment threads provides the first quantitative evidence for what female journalists have long suspected: that articles written by women attract more abuse and dismissive trolling than those written by men, regardless of what the article is about.
Although the majority of our regular opinion writers are white men, we found that those who experienced the highest levels of abuse and dismissive trolling were not. The 10 regular writers who got the most abuse were eight women (four white and four non-white) and two black men. Two of the women and one of the men were gay. And of the eight women in the “top 10”, one was Muslim and one Jewish.
And the 10 regular writers who got the least abuse? All men.

Be prepared to be less pleased. Turns out HuffPo didn't bother to do any actual research. The tube site (that's been accused of stealing most of it's porn including trans porn), doesn't actually block NC IPs it just brings up a pop up mocking them for being into 'shemales'.
I saw that South Park episode that had George RR Martin (as a character) where they kept on implying there were lots of penises on Game of Thrones before I ever watched the series.
I have to say, the reality was quite a disappointment.
Only if you want the ratio to indicate that penis and breast are equally represented, but the South Park quote would tend to set the ratio much more favorably to the penis as the overall perception is that there are a lot of them on the show.

I have a lot more stuff I could post about the Duggars too but I'm too busy throwing up in my mouth right now.
ETA: Buzzfeed is already reporting that there were potentially multiple victims in the Hastert case. Not surprised. And it'll probably get worse from here.
Pervy old fuckwad Dennis Hastert is going to jail. Fucker sexually molested multiple boys during his days as a teacher/wrestling coach, but he couldn't be prosecuted for any sex offenses because the applicable limitations periods expired long ago. He got tagged with criminal liability for financial shenanigans aimed at concealing payments made to one of his victims.
Rot in hell, shitnozzle.

The North Carolina cities of Greensboro and Charlotte must prove to the NCAA how each site will provide a discrimination-free zone in their respective arenas, or risk losing hosting privileges for the NCAA tournament's first and second rounds in 2017 and 2018, multiple NCAA officials told ESPN on Wednesday night.
What do they stand to lose?
