So no one's going to mention Ari's post from January 2015?

Re: Caribou Barbie is at it again
Hopefully the whole family is on the 'jury' and winners are allowed to double or nothing their profits through a mud and Natural Ice bare knuckle fist fight with Bristol. Although 10:1 says Palin quits part way through.
(For those wondering how these shows work, the plaintiff and defendant sign an arbitration deal with the studio, saying they will abide by the ruling. Both are paid an often undisclosed amount to come on the show often with the option to allow their lose to be deducted from the paid amount if it's less than the show fee. So whatever Palin decides would be legally binding based on contract law, even if her decision is completely batshit insane and has no legal reasoning.)

Which is p. much exactly how real-world arbitration works. One would hope that people who serve as arbiters in the real world don't display Palin's special combination of breathtaking stupidity and pant-hooting wingnut bravado, but in my experience it's more of a crapshoot than you'd think.

Palin has become quite the accomplished grifter since 2008. Maybe that was the idea all along.

Re: Caribou Barbie is at it again
Through a YouTube time vacuum I got sucked into watching a bunch of videos of Tina Fey as Sarah Palin and that made me wonder about her accent. I Googled "sarah palin fargo accent", because that seemed likely to get a bunch of relevant results, and what I got confused me more than I was when I started. I have an admittedly untrained ear for Northwestern accents, but to me Sarah Palin's speech is virtually indistinguishable from the speech in Fargo. People who have lived in that part of Minnesota say that the accent in the film is actually somewhat overstated from the way people actually speak there, which, fine. It definitely displays a Scandinavian influence in its singsongy quality, as does Palin's speech.
But I've read testimonials by professional linguists that suggest that Palin's speech is actually fairly typical of Alaska, or at least her region of it. Examples can be found via NPR, Slate, the Chicago Tribune, and Language Log. Other sources such as the Seattle Times have noted that the Wasilla accent is heavily influenced by the Minnesota accent because a lot of Wasillans were descendants of settlers from Minnesota.
However, this has been contradicted by testimonials of other commenters who claim to have lived in Alaska and in Wasilla specifically. These people have largely claimed that they have never heard anyone there speak like Palin does. It's also widely noted that, contrary to the oversimplified reporting in some of these articles, there is no such thing as an "Alaska accent", but rather a patchwork of different accents that vary widely from one another. This is not surprising given the gigantic geographical size of Alaska. Florida certainly has its share of regional accents; no one would confuse a South Florida accent for a North Florida one. (Incidentally, people might confuse a South Florida accent for an Iowa accent, which is just one of the many bizarre linguistic quirks of this country. This map seems to be the most comprehensive linguistic study of American dialects I've found. It appears to be generally considered that the South Florida accent, which I usually possess [due to the rather large amount of time I've spent in Britain, I can occasionally slip into Received Pronunciation if I spend too much time in the country or watching British television], is second only to the central midland accent of e.g. Iowa as being perceived as "standard" American speech).
I've also seen quite a lot of commentary suggesting that Palin's accent has changed over time; her accent was not as distinctive in her older videos as a sportscaster made during her 20s, and people have even observed that her accent is not as distinctive in her 2008 convention speech as it is in later interviews. I've also seen observations that her speech patterns seem to be less distinct when she appears to be giving rehearsed speech than when she appears to be speaking off the cuff. I'm not sure what to make of that.
I dunno. We have at least one professional linguist on this forum, I do believe. Maybe one of them can make sense of it for me.
In case you forgot just how close Fey's Couric interview came to Palin's original, Countdown did a side-by-side comparison:
I feel like, as it concerns Palin, this post should conclude with some Palinesque word salad, so it's all about getting our clinging god guns patriotism Fannie and Freddie back on the right track know what I mean you betcha? also, too.

Re: Caribou Barbie is at it again
As far as I knew, the Minnesota/Mat-Su Valley connection was considered the explanation.
She definitely downplays it in some scenarios (like those older clips) and I think she plays it up in others, probably increasingly as it became part of her "brand".
In this clip, she recognizably has the same accent, but is suppressing it somewhat/not exaggerating it. I would say that this particular audience would be one that would benefit from her playing up her local accent, except her local accent is not the majority accent in Alaska, so it probably carries little advantage outside of her home area.
There seems to be some disagreement among people who some experience there, but if both Bill Labov and that dialect map you linked to see an Inland North (Minnesota) connection in the Mat-Su Valley, along with at least some anecdotal evidence for it, I'm willing to believe that's the explanation.

That her parents don't speak like that is the best clue that it is a put-on.

Re: Caribou Barbie is at it again
Her parents aren't from Wasilla, Alaska, so it's not that surprising that they don't sound like it. Have you not met people whose parents have a different accent? That's the case with most Americans who raised their kids in the UK or vice versa. My parents used to be friends with a couple from Birmingham, England... their kids sounded American.
Meanwhile, my mom is from Sweden and I don't sound Swedish.
Children tend to emulate the speech of the community. So if they grow up somewhere different from their parents, they will tend not to sound like their parents.
I do think she's exaggerating her accent in many instances. But I don't think it's fake.

Re: Caribou Barbie is at it again
Accents are interesting as they can effect people differently, causing some to have thicker accents without realizing it. I'm too tired to find the relevant information right now but there's been research into brain damage to certain speech areas causing changes to pattern and intonation. (occasionally you might hear someone say, I take on a ____ accent when drunk, while some of them are just bullshitting, others actually do thanks to the slowdown in certain speech areas). So besides she's probably brain damaged from bare knuckle brawling in the Palin fight club, there could be physical reasons for her heavy accent.

Re: Caribou Barbie is at it again
I have observed some individuals who spoke with different accents than their parents, especially offspring of immigrants. But, for the most part, in my experience children sound a great deal like their parents, unless maybe their parents did not talk or read to their children much.

Re: Caribou Barbie is at it again
Anecdote time!
I was friends with a pair of sisters who moved to the US from Mexico when one was 14 and the other was 12. The older one retained a thick accent, to the point that when she was an adult she was paying for pronunciation classes to make herself more employable. ("We are working on our Veeees, our Zeeees, and T-H, as in 'theeee'.") Seriously, it came up a lot. We both worked as admins and we shared an office at a company with an address on "The Old Road". That's already kind of a weird street name to try to communicate over the phone when you don't have to spell it out to be understood. Also, UPS tracking numbers all have Z in them (or is it FedEx?), and I could hear the frustration when she'd read it out: "C, as in Ceebra".
Anywho, her younger sister talked exactly like a valley girl by the time she was in high school. So ultimately not that employable, either, I wouldn't think.

Re: Caribou Barbie is at it again
I was the eldest of five siblings. We moved around a lot. The only one of the five that ever changed their accent was my one year younger sister. Her accent changed every time to the local dialect every place we lived. But, as an adult, even with her husband and his family sounding like Okie hicks from the sticks, she has the same flat almost neutral Kansas accent as our parents did. All of my other siblings do as well. I do too, but I do put on the Okie a lot.

Track Palin arrested for burglary and assault of his father, allegedly. This story is so weird that I figure it has to be true, because it's too weird to make up.
