Technically the state's exclusion laws were superseded by federal law after the Fourteenth Amendment was adopted. But Oregon had a rather complicated relationship with that particular Amendment. Having ratified it in 1866, the state then rescinded its ratification when a more racist state government took control in 1868. The move was more symbolic than anything, but Oregon gave the sign that it wasn't on board with racial equality. Astoundingly, it wouldn't be until 1973 (and with very little fanfare) that activists would get the state to ratify the Fourteenth Amendment yet again.
Yep, 3 states have a combined MLK/REL day...Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama. Virginia used to, and threw Stonewall Jackson in there as well, but somehow realized how really gross and stupid it is and moved the Confederates day to the Friday before MLK day
We had a patron call when our January/February calendar of events went out to complain that we were doing too much African American programming. She said it was discriminatory. The librarian who took the call patiently explained to her that our big January program is always MLK day and February is Black History Month. She told her it isn't always like that, which is a nicer response than I think the patron deserved.

There's something sadly ironic that his trial will begin the same month as the non-fiction story of a white man with a gun killing over 150 may win best picture of the year.
That portion of the charges have already been tossed out of court for seven of the defendants. Some still have other charges pending for which there's apparently legally sufficient evidence, and another judge in a similar case has allowed the conspiracy charges to go ahead, meaning that there's now a split decision that practically guarantees an appeal (not that one wasn't expected in the first place on first amendment grounds alone). From the article, it's not clear if Brandon Duncan is off the hook.
When I went to see Gabriela Ortiz's opera ¡Únicamente la verdad! (Only the Truth!), I had no idea that I was participating in a criminal conspiracy. After all, the opera is about drug smuggling, inspired by a famous narcocorrido called "Contrabando y Traición" by Los Tigres del Norte, and the story is allegedly inspired by the life experience of Agustina Ramirez, who claims to have been a smuggler. So I got the "intangible benefit" of a good afternoon at the opera, and Ortiz presumably got both material and intangible benefits: her reputation as a composer was enhanced and LBO probably paid her. And Andreas Mitisek, the artistic director, is complicit too in light of all those ticket sales! I'd better watch my back. With a certain flexible interpretation of the statute (already stretched to the snapping point) they could probably nab me for attending a performance of Arden of Faversham, reading In Cold Blood, and watching Law & Order.
By the way, to increase my complicity I just bought the CD of the opera. I'm going to have to start looking out for a place to escape to. Maybe a state where they don't have such creative interpretations of conspiracy laws.

why did he record the conversation between parents and then put it on youtube? now two kids who used the same language he admits his daughter also used have a father with no job....and though that man also seems to be a colossal douchebag, it sucks he can no longer provide for them.
it's just adults using their children to make a name for themselves in a really shitty way.

In any event, Oregon has nothing on my old stompin' grounds, that progressive utopia Ohio. It took Ohio until 1867 to ratify the 14th Amendment. Oregon did it in 1866. The Ohio legislature purported to rescind its ratification in 1868, same year as the Oregon legislature, after Democrats took control. Rescission ain't possible in this instance, but hey, since when have white folk ever let legal impossibility stand in the way of righteousness?
Oregon symbolically re-ratified the amendment in 1973. Ohio did the same . . . thirty years later.

I can remember MLK day being called Robert E Lee day as a kid growing up in Mississippi. I'm not sure when it actually became an official thing. I think this is the first year I've ever heard it make national news.
