I'll have to take a look at them when I get some time.

Re: Gaming Nerds, To Me!
I'm playing. I imprisoned my only heir because he tried to assassinate me and I was at war with my only vassal, only now he likes me again. I'm not sure how I am going to patch things up with my son.

Re: Gaming Nerds, To Me!
Now I am controlling the guy who was once imprisoned by his father. I have been excommunicated from the church and now only my Bishop likes me. I set him to Rome to chat up the Pope. Not sure what to do about being excommunicated. Also I am nicknamed "the cruel". I did name my second son after the Pope, but I don't think he noticed.

Re: Gaming Nerds, To Me!
To undo excommunication, I believe you need a certain level of piety, and then you need to pay the Pope to un-excommunicate you. I think the Pope's opinion of you also needs to be not negative. If you go to the Pope's diplomacy screen, it should be one of the options, and you can see the exact requirements by hovering over it.
Piety can be pretty hard to build up. As far as I know, you can get it by having a character trait that gives a monthly piety award, having church buildings built in your bishopric holdings that give monthly piety awards, from random events, and by buying indulgences from the Pope (which should also be on the Pope's diplomacy screen).

Re: Gaming Nerds, To Me!
So I feel like I'm starting to get a handle on the game.
I'm currently playing as Konan de Rennes, Petty King of Brittany.
So far I managed to put down an insurrection by one of my vassals, deposing him in the process, imprison my mother for plotting to assassinate a trusted and valued vassal, and I have successfully pressed my claim to the county of Cornwall.
Next on the agenda: Devon.

Re: Gaming Nerds, To Me!
So I thought I'd give this a bash, so I'm trying to install steam as the easiest way to get it. Is it normal for there to be hours and hours of repeated updating (cycling through checking for updates, extracting & installing) when first trying to start steam? Win XP.
edit - nm, once I went through the junk that tries to run on startup and barred the AVG services then it got past that

Re: Gaming Nerds, To Me!
I've had a great success...
I achieved my goal of becoming King of Brittany and I successfully pressed my claim to the Duchy of Normandy (well 4 of it's 5 counties as the 5th had previously revolted and gained independence).
And I have done some heinous things as well.
I've had several people murdered including my slothful, imbecile of a 9 year old grand daughter (who after one of my vassals succeeded in murdering my daughter-in-law, became the ruler of Mortain). I was a bit ashamed of having to do this but my grand daughter never would have made an effective ruler (imbecile gives the character -9 and ALL stats). Fortunately her heir was a much more capable fellow.
I also had a vassal who kept backing plots to usurp my rule and place somebody else on my throne. I could never get enough backing to off the Count starting these plots so I had to off the people who he intended to replace me (at least twice).
I am having a bit of a problem with the Normandy acquisitions. I'd really like to depose a couple of the rulers and replace them with more friendly people, however even though these places are in the Kingdom of Brittany and under my rule, the French crown still somehow exerts some control over them. I can't replace the rulers because the French crown is so weak and the nobles have forced the French King to give up much of his crown authority.

Crusader Kings II, and all of the DLC except the newest one, are currently 75% in the December Steam sale.

Re: Gaming Nerds, To Me!
I printed this off the Pardadox CKII forums. There is a lot of good information about game mechanics in it.
Well, never mind the PDF is too large to upload.
You can find the guide here though you will have to register for a forum account and register your game key with Paradox.

Re: Gaming Nerds, To Me!
So I finally got round to playing some CKII... not really sure what I'm doing yet, but it's kinda fun.
Anyway, I was just about to start it up and noticed Steam is doing 75% off Europa Universalis IV for another 12 hours, if anyone is interested in other Paradox games.
