Re: Conservatives say stupid shit
I got a message from one of my nieces today, so I logged onto Facebook to read it.
And after doing so, I came across a discussion in which one guy was talking about how he'd recently read an article which pointed out that evangelical Christians tend to have larger families than do most other Americans. And so he was going on about how terrific this was, and how -- given that evangelicals are out-breeding Liberals and other "evil" people [and no, I am not exaggerating or engaging in hyperbole; he came right out and insisted that anyone who is not an evangelical Christian is almost-certainly a follower of Evil, and that Liberals certainly are] -- he and his ilk would soon be returning this country to its proper Christian roots.
From among the chorus of supporters, someone pointed out that Muslims tend to have relatively large families too. The first guy said that this was okay, because there are still a lot more of "us" than there are of "them" in this country, and "once we've gotten rid of all the Liberals, we can just shoot the Muslims."
Someone pointed out that he might want to be careful about saying such things on Facebook. He replied that he has received warnings about his "hate speech" in the past, but he's going to go right on speaking his mind, because he's never going to let anyone stop him from saying "God's truth."
The truly scary thing is that, in all probability, the original poster and all the people cheering him on truly and sincerely believe that anyone who doesn't share their religious beliefs is -- knowingly or not, but probably knowingly -- allied with the Forces of Evil.
They probably sincerely believe their claims that Liberals are evil by definition, and they seem to actually believe that your average "Liberal Woman" loves nothing more than engaging in unprotected sex with random strangers and then getting abortions. And they seem to honestly believe that the average person on welfare drives a Cadillac, has steak for dinner every night, spends all day watching television, and never even thinks about trying to get a job -- and that Liberals think that's just fine and dandy.
They seem to literally take it as an article of faith that our "Founding Fathers" wanted this country to be a Christian theocracy, and that it's their duty to "return it to its roots." And every single problem in this country is due to the "fact" that "kids can't pray in school anymore." Meanwhile, they seem to simultaneously believe that the overwhelming majority of Americans [or more precisely, the overwhelming majority of "True Americans"] are evangelical Christians like themselves -- but that evangelical Christians are an opressed and persecuted minority, deserving of special protection.
The original poster insisted -- repeatedly -- that there are no atheists, because "everyone knows in their hearts that God exists." Self-identified "atheists" are really just bad people who hate God and who refuse to live by his "just and perfect rules" -- so they pretend to believe that there is no God, so that they can "reject" his "just and perfect rules."
And he whines that when he insists that those who don't share his religious views are "liars and hypocrites," and that Liberals and homosexuals and others who don't share his views are "disgusting and perverted" -- this is not "hate speech." And anyone who says that it is is an "anti-Christian bigot."
You know, there are times when I'm truly ashamed for my species.

Re: Conservatives say stupid shit
I thought it was funny for the most part, especially the "Ask your doctor" {whack} "... ask your congressman" bit.
But oddly, I found myself thinking "she looks way too good" at the end. I think that the humor could have been preserved, but the point could have been driven home a lot more effectively if they hadn't made it look as if a violent rape doesn't cause severe trauma. If she'd been made up to look like she was covered in bruises at the end, and maybe bleeding from a split lip, it might have helped drive home the point that rape isn't just sex; it causes real trauma, emotional as well as physical.
After all, I've heard guys say "rape is just sex, what's the big deal? I wish some attractive woman would 'rape' me." Some men honestly don't seem to understand why rape is such a horrible thing.

Re: Conservatives say stupid shit
I see what you mean, but I think it's fair game. There is a whole lot of pretty low-hanging fruit these days, so apparently, it's necessary to drive the point home.
There are a lot of stupid old men going around saying things like this, and nothing seems to have served as much of a deterrent so far. So maybe, short of actually putting people in the stockades, Akin can best serve as an example by having his cruel and stupid claims define him in the public perception for the rest of his life. There should be songs about it and parodies and he should forever be defined as that stupid old legislator who believed in uterus fairies.
And it shouldn't be just him, either. Every stupid old man who thinks he's qualified to legislate or to serve some role in guiding public discourse should be laughed at forever when they betray the fact that they're trying to legislate reproductive health without understanding how babies get made. Limbaugh, Romney, all of them. It's shameful and absurd and they should be publicly humiliated for it sufficiently that it serves as an effective deterrent to other stupid people who might be inclined to pontificate on stuff they don't understand.

I am a strong advocate of social derision as straight up behavioral modification, though. There is absolutely no reasoning with some people, especially if their biases and ignorance are that ingrained. But you can still train them with simple cause and effect. They can learn that when they start talking out of their asses like that, people make fun of them. If nothing else, it can and does work to give them a little pause before they open their mouths next time.

Social derision is powerful, as a tactic that works with segments of the public, that then put pressure on Akin and others. I was mostly nit-picking in that I don't believe Limbaugh, Akin, and others can be shamed. They only perceive the impact on their financial sponsorship or their chances at garnering votes. And unfortunately much of the public appears satire impaired. It is still an effective tool that is awesome plus, lulz.

The point is that he wasn't talking about a woman's experience of "getting knocked up", but a father's experience of counselling a pregnant daughter. And I thought that was the point you were making. I apologise to you and LS if I have misunderstood your "I'm going to give the asshole a break here" intent.

The fact that the question is wholly legitimate speaks volumes about the little fellow's character.

1. Where did livius drusus "declare" that justifying calling Smith a dick because he said that out of wedlock pregnancy is similar to pregnancy via rape is "untenable"? Show us the post where livius drusus "declared" that.
2. Are liv's declarations binding on LadyShea? Are they binding on me? Are they binding on you? Are we allowed to entertain different ideas and notions? Or is independence of thought an issue here after all?

The only similarity between the two scenarios was pregnancy.
I think it's despicable that he doesn't feel the circumstances under which the pregnancy occurred are important or pertinent or very much create a huge distinction between the two - except, according to him, married vs. unmarried is important to note. I wonder if he accepts marital rape as a real thing?
Anyway, there is no similarity between rape and consensual sex and that's what I called him a dick about. It's like saying having your stomach sliced open by an attacker is similar to abdominal surgery because in both cases the guts are exposed.

Thanks, LS, I do understand what you were calling him a dick for, and you are right about the lack of similarity, provided you are talking about rape and consensual sex from his daughter's point of view. I think he made it clear enough he was talking about it from a different point of view—one that I think liv recognised, and you (so far) haven't.
It's like saying having your stomach sliced open by an attacker is similar to abdominal surgery ...
I think it's more like saying restorative stitching up of the stomach of a victim of a knife attack is similar to restorative stitching up after an operation on the abdomen, from the point of view of a surgeon.

Really? You think he "made it clear enough"? Can you point out specifically what in his statement is "clear enough" to you?
Quote:
MARK SCOLFORO, ASSOCIATED PRESS: How would you tell a daughter or a granddaughter who, God forbid, would be the victim of a rape, to keep the child against her own will? Do you have a way to explain that?
SMITH: I lived something similar to that with my own family. She chose life, and I commend her for that. She knew my views. But, fortunately for me, I didn’t have to ... she chose they way I thought. No don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t rape.
SCOLFORO: Similar how?
SMITH: Uh, having a baby out of wedlock.
SCOLFORO: That’s similar to rape?
SMITH: No, no, no, but … put yourself in a father’s situation, yes. It is similar. But, back to the original, I’m pro-life, period.

What specifically makes you believe that LadyShea has not recognized liv's reading of the remark?
Or is your real problem that LadyShea has thoughts of her very own?

Re: Conservatives say stupid shit
I'm also intrigued by the elliptical "[b]ut, fortunately for me, I didn’t have to...she chose they way I thought" remark. Didn't have to what, exactly? What would he have had to do if his daughter hadn't chosen to act consistently with "the way he thought?" Force his daughter to bear her rapist's child?
By the way, I herewith declare that any alternative reading of that remark is untenable. Sorry, everyone, no independent thought on this one. mickthinks will be policing you.

Therein lies the real dicketry, imo.
Then again, I still harbor some lingering doubts about whether "father's situation" refers to the father of the pregnant woman or the father of the pregnant woman's child. The former construction seems substantially more reasonable, but I have yet to see any indicia that ol' Smitty is even the least bit inclined toward reasonableness.

Re: Conservatives say stupid shit
If you notice, I left off the "....as a father" part in my quotes of the interview, because that was him trying backpedal and to justify his disgusting comparison, in my opinion. That was what liv was addressing. That is not what I was addressing.
What I see is that he heard pregnancy from rape and immediately his mind went to pregnancy from consensual sex, while not married, as a similar situation. That was the first thing out of his mouth, so to me seems to be most telling of his mindset. I think he honestly thinks the outcome, pregnant and not married to the father, makes the situations equal.
Lets look at the substance of what I was responding to.
Quote:
Scolforo: How would you tell a daughter or a granddaughter who would be the victim of a rape, to keep the child against her own will?
SMITH: I lived something similar to that with my own family. She chose life, and I commend her for that.
SCOLFORO: Similar how?
SMITH: Uh, having a baby out of wedlock.
|
That "uh" there makes me think he realized what a dickheaded thing he said too, if anyone cares about my interpretation. Also, what does he mean "he lived" it? He didn't live it, he wasn't the one who was pregnant so fuck him saying he lived it. He's a dick.

Well, to be fair (though why we should is a mystery) he did live the "how would you tell a daughter or a granddaughter..." part and I think that was what he was referring to.
