It's basically saying 'mammals existed at the same time as dinosaurs' in the article. Headline though, basically a whole new level of clickbait.

APOD: 2023 June 29 – A Message from the Gravitational Universe

Astronomers detect ‘cosmic bass note’ of gravitational waves | Astronomy | The Guardian
Quote:
Sound comes from the merging of supermassive black holes across the universe
Not a sound, but anyway.
Quote:
Astronomers have detected a rumbling “cosmic bass note” of gravitational waves thought to be produced by the slow-motion mergers of supermassive black holes across the universe.

...

The latest observations tune into a far deeper frequency range, with a single complete wave, travelling at the speed of light, taking roughly 30 years to pass by Earth. Scientists think this cosmic rumble is probably produced by the entire population of supermassive black hole binaries over roughly the past 8bn years.
If 30 years is peak to peak for a wave ... then the frequency is 1/30y or 0.00000000106 Hz or about 38 octaves below middle D.

I feel like I must have originally learned about this here, but I don't remember and search was unproductive. So here is a video about the discovery of an aperiodic monotile without reflections. Also tesselation. There, now this post has all the necessary keywords.

I see your "necessary" keywords, and raise you Penrose (the name), closure, local topology, quasicrystals, and einstein (not the name).

I confess that I didn't even know they were looking for such a thing. But, that's pretty cool.

Due to the compact size, metasurface can be wildly used in augmented reality (AR) [158–160], virtual reality (VR) [161], and light detecting and ranging (LIDAR) [156, 158, 162, 163]. To explore more capabilities, the bilayer metasurface is introduced to explore the capabilities of greater manipulation, that can’t be generated by the single metasurface. Inverse design based on optimization algorithms or machine learning is also introduced. Inverse design helps us achieve unique metasurface performance, especially those problems that cannot be solved intuitively by traditional design methods. How to develop the inverse design algorithm fast and precisely remains the research hotspot [164, 165]. However, traditional metasurface is passive. A dynamic and compact optical element is appealing. By integrating the metasurface with LCs, digital micromirror devices (DMD), spatial light modulators (SLM), or other dynamic devices [166]. To further minimize the size of the system, phase-change materials are introduced. They can change their optical response under electrical, thermal, mechanical, and light stimulation [167, 168]. The spatiotemporal metasurface can achieve more capabilities.

Maybe you saw it (and thanked it) in the Simon Puzzles thread.

Edit: hmm different video, but rabbit-hole adjacent.

From ChatGPT:

Quote:
The age of the universe is estimated to be around 13.8 billion years. If we consider Homo habilis as the starting point for humankind, which existed approximately 2.1 to 1.5 million years ago, we can calculate the percentage of the age of the universe that humans have been around.

To calculate this percentage, we need to find the duration of time humans have been around (from Homo habilis to the present day) and divide it by the age of the universe:

Duration of time humans have been around = Present day - Homo habilis era
Duration = 2023 AD - 1.5 million years ago (assumed as the oldest point for Homo habilis)

Duration = 2023 - 1,500,000 ≈ 2023 - 1,500,000 ≈ 1,498,023 years

Percentage = (Duration of time humans have been around / Age of the universe) * 100
Percentage = (1,498,023 years / 13,800,000,000 years) * 100
Percentage ≈ 0.0109%

So, if we assume humankind started with Homo habilis, humans have been around for approximately 0.0109% of the age of the universe. It's important to note that this is a very small fraction of the universe's total existence.
That last sentence really put things into perspective for me.

Conversely I find it wild that while humans haven’t been around for long, the solar system has been around for 1/3rd the length of the universe, which makes the beginning of the universe seem not that far away.
