Pip pip, cheerio, Bob's your uncle and all that rot
OMG, guys, guess what! Mom invited me to go to London with her in July.
I haven't been overseas since I was 19. I need to get my passport updated!
What do I do! Where do I go!

Have you renewed your passport within the last 15 years? If so, fill in this form, print it out, sign it and mail it along with your old passport, a passport picture, a $135 check, and your marriage cert if you legally changed your name since the last passport.

Re: Pip pip, cheerio, Bob's your uncle and all that rot
Fortunately I changed my name there and back without ever changing my passport (in fact I used that alias one time for incognito domestic travel) so the name is no issue. We have a passport office on campus that I'm going to try first. I am not freaking out about the document so much as the trip. Is it July yet?!

Re: Pip pip, cheerio, Bob's your uncle and all that rot
I don't know what sort of stuff you like, but holy shit Westminster Abbey impressed the hell out of me. I love massive churches/cathedrals though, all that stained glass, the architecture and just knowing that it's sooooo damn old.
Of course it's right by the London Eye, Big Ben and the Parliament buildings which are all worth a look as well, so that helps. Taking a ride on the London Eye in the evening is fantastic, you can see for miles and the city looks fantastic at night. I think you'd want to book that in advance as it can be quite busy.
We love a bus tour early in the visit because it orients you to the city and you get some ideas of what you'd like to see. I can recommend these guys they have a few (3?) different routes that you can take all for one price. The ticket is good for 24 hours and is hop-on-hop-off wherever you like so it's a great way to get around the city cheap as well. You can get a 48 hour ticket too. Plus the ticket includes a free river cruise on the Thames and some other stuff. Try to get one of the buses that have a live tour guide (rather than the earphones ones) because they really add a lot to the tour, giving great background info as you go.
Those are sort of the really obvious things, so no surprises there.
I would also recommend the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum if you like that sort of thing, but be aware that they are HUGE and could easily take an entire day each if you're thorough. On the other hand, my dad and I sort of breezed through the Science Museum just cherry picking things that looked up our alley and did it in about 2 hours.
Finally, I would also recommend a Jack The Ripper Tour. They're walking tours that take about 2 hours. Again, nice info about the city during that era and just a fun way to go over the Ripper case.

For me London exists pretty much for one thing, theater. I highly recommend seeing Antony Sher, if he's in anything while you're there. He's one of my favorite actors and rarely does film.

Jealous. Say hi to my in-laws for me.
And skip the London Eye. I hate that thing. Hang out in SoHo. See the Tate and the British Museum. Also be prepared for no A/C on the tube or trains. And other things. In short, choppy sentences.

I thought you'd never ask! Mom has to work some of the time and I told her I had a local I could kill some time with. It's going to be the second week in July.
Mom has a bunch of stuff planned for us, including the original Hard Rock Cafe. Last time she went she had to work one day and her friend Candy took off on her own on a bus tour and she saw the Queen at Buckingham Palace!

I can't guarantee hooking you up with her Maj. However, I am the local for you to kill time with.

This is probably a really stupid question, so feel free to roll your eyes...
You know the Olympics are in London in July, right? Even in early July the entire city will be gearing up for tens of thousands of extra people coming. You may have trouble getting a place to stay, booking tours, etc... hell you may have trouble walking down the street!
Maybe that is all moot because your mom is going for work related things, but just in case I thought it might be worth mentioning.

Thank you. I had considered that. I checked and the opening ceremonies are two weeks after I leave so I'm not sweating it too much.

Makes more sense than a cold one!
Crap, hadn't considered the bloody Olympics. I've already booked our accommodation on the way to Dublin (Docklands Hilton dah-link), but we're flying out of Heathrow so we'll need a hotel for the previous night. Fark, I'll have a look now.

Do the Ripper Walk, but be sure not to get the Canadian tour guide. She was very enthusiastic about the subject, but not a good storyteller. Walking tours are about storytelling.

"This is Hyde park, eh? He killed prostitutes here, eh?"
We're staying at Marriot Park Lane. Apparently it's right across from Hyde park. Woo!
I wasn't thinking about traveling very far away, as it's my first time in the city and I'm sure there's plenty to see and do shouting distance from the hotel. The one exception is I asked my mom how far it is to Stonehenge, but I didn't get an answer on that yet.
