Re: Winnie the Flu
Weekly shopping report. Lots of cars on the road, almost like normal volume.
The store shelves were emptier than last week. Wasn't expecting that. Did score two bottles of off brand alcohol based hand sanitizer, first time I've seen it available since hoardageddon started. No paper plates or napkins, among lots of other sold out items.

The countries that did act more quickly were mostly just lucky: the ramp-up of infections happened a week or two later for them, so they had the advantage of being able to copy the lockdown measures already implemented by the first few countries.
Are there any countries that have implemented lockdown too soon? So that they've already endured the pain of lockdown, but are still not close to returning to normal?
Unless and until scientists develop a vaccine or effective drug treatment, all countries will be suffering from this virus for years to come.
Sadly, we're soon going to see huge spikes in deaths in poorer countries that don't have sufficient hospitals, nor the means of implementing lockdown. It will be terrible for the people living there, but those that survive will likely be returning to normal while the richer world is still enduring some form of lockdown.

In short, the toilet paper industry is split into two, largely separate markets: commercial and consumer. The pandemic has shifted the lion’s share of demand to the latter. People actually do need to buy significantly more toilet paper during the pandemic — not because they’re making more trips to the bathroom, but because they’re making more of them at home. With some 75% of the U.S. population under stay-at-home orders, Americans are no longer using the restrooms at their workplace, in schools, at restaurants, at hotels, or in airports.
|
|
If that was true, they would have cited evidence that commercial tp sales had fallen. Which they didn't. So either it's a good theory but not actually true, or they are lazy journalists. (I choose to believe both).
|
I think it has some merit, but doesn't justify buying two shopping carts of the stuff like some of those idiots did. Agree it would be more convincing with data.
|
It looks like they were writing the article before relevant data became available (i.e., they asked the question, so evidence inveighs against mere laziness):
Quote:
Georgia-Pacific, which sells to both markets, told me its commercial products also use more recycled fiber, while the retail sheets for its consumer brands Angel Soft and Quilted Northern are typically 100% virgin fiber. Eric Abercrombie, a spokesman for the company, said it has seen demand rise on the retail side, while it expects a decline in the “away-from-home activity” that drives its business-to-business sales.

Re: Winnie the Flu
Updated today, via an article in USA Today:
Quote:
The demand has “increased on retail, and it’s staying steady or surged in the commercial market” because of use at busy health care facilities and other essential businesses, said Eric Abercrombie, spokesman for Georgia-Pacific, based in Atlanta. Abercrombie said the company still expects commercial-market toilet paper demand to decline as “business and vacation plans change.”

Even now, a little around two weeks of middle-of-the-road measures to stem the tide, I don't think we here in Delaware can even see the peak of this.
