Alas it was all for naught. The bread is a hard lump. I blame the yeast. :shakeyeast:

Excuse me, Sir, do you have a moment to talk about wild yeasts and how they are harnessed in service of humankind?

I don't know if I am terrible at sewing because I hate it, or if I hate it because I'm terrible at it.

I knew this would summon you. Do I have to harvest yeast from between my cat's toes or something?

Re: Isolation diaries
You'd have better luck finding yeast in your coworker's genitals, but you could try the toes if they're reticent.
Seriously, you can probably get a starter going within a week.
Oh, man, I just checked to see if Carl Griffith's 1847 Oregon Trail starter is still around, and bless them, it is, although it looks like they're a little backlogged right now.

Re: Isolation diaries
I tried doing a sourdough starter. It was doing OK, until daughter showed up to spend a few days, and decided to clean up the kitchen for us.

Re: Isolation diaries
There is brewery around here that marketed a beer that was made with yeast that had been combed from the actual brewer guy's beard. No. Thanks.

Re: Isolation diaries
My daughter's cat has a habit of licking herself bald, which she started when she went to high school and wound up spending long days away from home. Now that my daughter has been home for 2 months, a lot of the cat's hair has been growing back. I think our cat would be on the dog's side.

Re: Isolation diaries
Spent much of the day dealing with my construction loan. Still trying to consolidate my documents and eliminate duplicates. Participated in this evening's minyan. I had signed up to do the poetry reading before; I read Langston Hughes' "Intern at Provident Hospital."

Re: Isolation diaries
Public holiday today. April 30 - May 1st is the highlight of the Finnish year. Seriously. It is like our mardi gras, independence day and new years all moved to when we are better able to celebrate having made it through another winter. There may still be wintry days in May, but it is officially SPRING, BABY, let the warmth and light commence!
So this year has been hard on most people for whom this time usually signifies the end of the previous 7 months of the normal social, physical and emotional distancing we have every year. The TV is running footage of celebrations from previous years, as if that might cheer us up. I was supposed to visit my 80-y-o mother (outside in her yard), but am not feeling 100%, so best not to.
So I am attempting to get drunk on max 1% alcohol sima, eating cold sausages and potato salad, and dancing around the flat to a 1-hour cut of Speaking Moistly. Counts as exercise.
Might cross-stitch later, IDK.

Re: Isolation diaries
I also made some sima!
Mini-Miisa accused me of cultural appropriation. To which I say, try and stop me.

Re: Isolation diaries
Speaking of weak sima, I'm tossing around the idea of setting up a small distillery. I've been checking them out on Amazon and they are surprisingly cheap.
It would certainly have it's "fun" use creating libations, but you could also collect the isopropyl for disinfecting stuff.

Re: Isolation diaries
I love living in Sa Jose.
In the BeforeTimes, I loved being able to go and Do Things, but we still have cool stuff.
San Jose has two rose gardens. Heritage which has a huge variety and the Municipal Rose Garden which is more of a park and has a few redwoods.
I went to the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden day before yesterday. Took Chandra of course.
The roses were popping!!!
But there were lots of buds getting ready to go as well.
My mask was made by my good Ingress friend Donna who is awesome.
The park was pretty busy but many people were wearing masks and everyone seemed to be maintaining distance.
