Default History is the stuff of tombstones

I am not fond of tombstones. Likewise with history. While I find enjoyment and words of wisdom from those that have lived and died before me, I do not commemorate them or think of them in any special way.

The first book written in the Greek tradition was about a war. History seems to be focused on the tale of various wars and the heroes who have braved the odds and been victorious. History is seldom about losers and the havoc caused by long periods of unresolvable conflict.

The glory of bygone eras and their tragic ending has no appeal to me. Tragedy is not something I enjoy nor find something to write about.

Life to me is about the future and the living.

Tombstones can be beautiful sculptural art. They can also be damned funny. I once encountered a headstone in a very old cemetery that helpfully informed its visitors: "This time was mine, next may be thine."

Perhaps you dislike history and cemeteries because you fear your own inevitable death.

I do not think I have a fear of death, in fact, my death is already arranged for, bought, and paid for. I am being cremated with a green burial. I would like my ashes scattered to the wind over a river, but my funeral director said he is not allowed by law to do that.

Why would your funeral director have to scatter your ashes? Isn't that something your friends and family would do?

Now, now, that would be against conservation laws. Just throw Diamond Liv into the hypogeum to spend eternity with the rich, loamy decay of extinct animals, dead humangs and the fabulous assortment of plant life from all over the empire that still thrives in the cracks of ancient masonry.

Yes that is what he told me. He said that he could give my ashes to a friend or family and they could scatter ashes to the wind. The problem is that I have no family and the friends that I have are not close and more like acquaintances. However, it is possible that I may develop a close friendship in the future so that would change my plans.

How can cremation be green? When I've breathed my last, I want my body donated to a body farm. What? Worms and buzzards have to eat too.

Tombstones are convenient for locating a specific burial site.

Yes you are correct. However, I have chosen not to have a tombstone, headstone, or any other kind of marker.

My first impression of euthanasia is that I don't like the idea, so I didn't look further into it. I am, however, in favor of physician-assisted suicide. That is something I would really consider if my health became terrible.

Yes. I had to look up the meaning of soylent and I am soylent. However, it is kind of an obscure title for the username since it is only known among those that saw the movie. I will stick with bobsavegan

Also Soylent Green wasn't, despite its advertising, vegan.

Let me ask you this, Bob, just because I'm a big history nerd, have you no interest at all in, say, your own roots? Where your ancestors came from? What they did? The days when history meant only Great Men and Big Battles are long gone.

If I had left the impression that I have no interest in History at all then I apologize. I have read about The Glory that was Greece, The Conquering Roman Empire, European Colonialism, The founding and settlement of America and others. I used to read a lot of Will Durant's "Story of Civilization."

As far as my roots are concerned, I only know about my paternal and maternal grand parents. I don't know anything about my ancestors farther back than that.
