Science City Nature Challenge

I'll be taking part in my home city's bid to win in this year's City Nature Challenge.

The idea is that people get out to make observations of the natural world over a four day period, with bragging rights going to the city with the most species, most observations and most participants. I'm told there will be some sort of handicap based on city population and area.

Observing dates are from April 26-29, and loads of cities are registered. I'm sure some of you will be in or near one of these places. Anything living (or recently) dead is fair game (preferably wild), from the mould on your bread to whatever wild beasts you have roaming round your neighbourhood. Observations are posted to the iNaturalist platform, which has both web and phone app interfaces.

Be cool if some other FFers gave this a go!

The City Nature Challenge is on again, from April 24 to 27. With a focus on recording biodiversity in the home and yard this year...

The distribution is interesting ... none in the Nordics except for Copenhagen. None in north Africa, the Middle East or India.

A few in China, several in Taiwan. Lots in South Africa.

That looks pretty interesting. A couple of the grandkids would REALLY dig into something like that.

The observation period is over, but people are still adding their observations. So far over 38,000 people have made over 700,000 observations of over 29,000 species across all the cities. Top species right now is the dandelion.
