I can’t watch. I’m enough of a wreck just reading people’s reactions; I’ve literally had two sleepless nights over the past week, mostly as a direct result of the news stories. I’m not a survivor of sexual assault, but I’ve so closely seen how severely sexual assault has ruined the lives of people I’ve loved that it almost feels like I’m experiencing a vicarious echo of trauma as a result of the recent news. (To be clear, it’s at least an order of magnitude less severe than I assume any survivor’s must be, and I’d guess two or more orders of magnitude less severe.) It feels like we’re living in a slowly progressing horror film. I… I don’t know. I’m going to post a thread with resources in a moment. I don’t know what else to do, other than call senators and such.

(seriously, call your senators.)

ETA:

she’s a much braver person than I’ll ever be; that’s for sure

All the reviews I’ve read have unequivocally praised how she’s come across. Chris Wallace on Fox News has said, “This was extremely emotional, extremely raw, and extremely credible…This is a disaster for the Republicans.” I’m guessing Chuck has been emotionally moved by the hearing as well.

Also relevant:

She could not be a better witness.

The prosecutor that the GOP men outsourced their questioning to is basically just baffling? Like literally nobody (including Republicans) has any idea wtf she is getting at here.

One of the many things I hate about twitter is how it allows for the appearance of equal voices no matter what cistern they are echoing out of.

On one side of the court,
Preet Bharara a corruption busting attorney and respected scholar at New York University school of Law.

On the other,
John Cardillo of such media establishments as his youtube channel, The rebel media (canadian alt-right white supremacist magazine) The Blaze and NRA news.

Al Franken resigned literally less than a year ago over allegations far less severe than the ones against Kavanaugh, and Graham admitted that they will literally make shit up about Democrats in retaliation for Dr Blasey’s testimony, which is, to my understanding, an explicit violation of the oath of office (one of the people here who are fluent in legalise may wish to elaborate, since I don’t fully grok it). He can burn in hell forever.

That reminds me, I meant to ask whether the Repubs getting in a woman to do the questioning is a tacit admission of their bias. And/or awareness of the damage they could do themselves individually.

Above all, it’s cowardice. They want someone else to do their dirty work. I think it could still backfire, since, first of all, Grassley completely shat the bed in the intro, from what I’ve heard, and secondly, it’s such a transparent sign of cowardice that I can’t imagine it fooling very many people who haven’t completely drunk the Kool-Aid. But yes, it does seem to be a tacit admission that the optics for this are terrible for them.

:yeahthat:

They are afraid and they need a safe space, because SUDDENLY these poor white guys have to worry about perceptions when they set out to undermine the credibility of a nice white lady (like so many suburban females voters, when you think about it) who got sexually assaulted by the white guy they are trying to put on SCOTUS to gut a century or so of progress for women. It really is unfair. That is why they had to sit there mute and useless.

I almost felt bad for the prosecutor (did not, though - I sure hope the GOP is paying her a fuck ton of $$) because I got the sense that Grassley threw her for a loop with 5 minute questions. It was so random and disjointed because she couldn't establish any linear narrative through her questioning. She kinda even said that in her last questions, like "uh, I did the best I could with the absurd parameters you guys gave me, sorry I fucking sucked at it."

Sure. The constitution doesn't specify a number of justices. At one time or another there's been as many as 11 and as few as 5. The appointments are for life, so the Dems couldn't legislatively boot Kavanaugh by doing away with his seat, but Congress can add new seats. FDR and the Dem Congress threatened to do something like that in the late 1930s when the old geezers on the Supreme Court kept shooting down New Deal legislation.

Of course, it's highly unlikely that the modern Democratic Party would have the stones to even make such a proposal, much less try to implement it.

Not at all. The last time wasn't that long ago. During the Shrub administration, the GOP had the presidency, both houses of Congress, and a 6-3 majority on SCOTUS.

In my estimation at least 40% of the voting population will happily drink the Kool-Aid fully knowing what it is.

Has there ever been any nominee (at least since the advent of TV) who's been this -- vocal? -- while confirmation was going on? I seem to recall that Clarence Thomas stayed fairly quiet and undemonstrative during the whole circus (allowing GOP senators to do the dirty work of attacking Anita Hill). His answers to questions were ridiculous and often obviously false, but he didn't flail and whine the way Kavanaugh is doing, unless I'm just not remembering it.

Of course, I've long suspected Thomas is an android with severely limited programming, but a relatively dignified android, anyway.

Sock, he is a wealthy white man who is entitled to his seat on the Supreme Court that he has EARNED. His property interest in his Supreme Court seat is so tangible that due process considerations come into play. It is a disgrace - a national disgrace - how these Democrats are trying to steal his seat away from him.

Boys, Flo is watching Kavanaugh with the sound down, because I want to admire his nice coif and creamy Aryan skin without distraction. But Flo just saw that pesky word scroll across the bottom of the screen and it seems he is talking about how he coached girls’ basketball. Flo isn’t quite following. Is he bragging about not assaulting the girls on his team? Or what is his point? :whatthe:
