Do you put pot in your chicken pie? Do you make your pie in a pot? Wait, you can't pie has to be baked. If you eat chicken pot pie, should you have cake for dessert?

I made my first apple pie of the season yesterday. I have been denied access to Gravenstein apples, but I was presented with Spartan apples, so I trialed them. Net result is: Meh. Yes, they are tart, but not up to Gravenstein, or even Granny Smith, standards and they did not 'cook down' enough for my taste....a little too much 'underdone', and baking longer would have torched the crust.

The chooks came through for me, even though I was diverted to looking for eggs in the nesting basket and throughout the garden....only to find that they'd gone back in to the chook chalet to lay. A half dozen eggs...dirty, but servicable.

And, lastly, my hoominnip plants are collating madly. Of late, the garden has taken on a slight musty, and 'skunky' aroma. Soon, we will be bringing in the sheaves.

'Baked' is a key descriptor.

So...Here we are again.

The apple pie tasting comparisons are in full swing. One visit has been made to the annual Apple Tasting Festival at a local wholesale nursery and a return is already being planned.

This year, Idared is the current champion, having been tested against Red Winesap, Jonathan, and King David apples last year.

The contenders this year are Newtown Pippin and Northern Spy apples. The Newtown Pippin has been tried and found wanting. The Northern Spy pie has not yet been produced.

I need to return to obtain at least one more type, as I can make two pies with my crust recipe. I'm hoping for Spitzenburg, but Cortland or Ashmead's Kernel will do.

Again this year, there are no Gravenstein apples offered at all.

There are no Bramley apples, either. I'd like to get my mitts on some of those. They were tres tasty in Cumbria.

Oh, and I just harvested cannabis plants #3 & #4, after finishing processing the first two. I've a half gallon jar full of nice buds.

And, no chickens this year.
