The Grauniad has a good write-up. Alan Rickman, giant of British screen and stage, dies at 69 | Film | The Guardian

From the linkIn 2005, Rickman directed the award-winning play My Name is Rachel Corrie, which he and Katharine Viner – now Guardian editor-in-chief – compiled from the emails of the student who was killed by a bulldozer while protesting against the actions of the Israel Defense Forces in the Gaza Strip.

Rickman remained politically active throughout his life: he was born, he said, “a card-carrying member of the Labour party”, and was highly involved with charities including Saving Faces and the International Performers’ Aid Trust, which seeks to help artists in developing and poverty-stricken countries.

Rickman publicly spoke of his unhappiness about the “Hollywood ending” of 1996 film Michael Collins, a historical biopic of the Irish civil war, in which he portrayed Éamon de Valera, and expressed his belief that art ought to help educate as well as entertain. “Talent is an accident of genes, and a responsibility,” he once said.

Cancer takes Alan Rickman and David Bowie at age 69, but Donald Trump is still alive and seemingly healthy at the same age. There truly is no justice.

Also, fuck this week and fuckfuckfuck this entire last month.

I didn't even know he had produced that play. I see a lot of mourning for him in the pro-Palestinian community on Facebook.

Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey dead at 67 of "complications arising from rheumatoid arthritis, colitis and pneumonia". Too bad. Hotel California is still a classic.

Additionally, Mott the Hoople drummer Dale Griffin has also died at 67 of Alzheimer's. Not as familiar with their work, but it's hard not to like "All the Young Dudes".

Sorry to hear about Frey. It's weird, though; Hotel California was persistently running through my head this morning.

If I believed in such things, I'd say my "psychic powers" were alerting me to Frey's death.

We (all should) know that Christopher Lee died last year, but did anyone realize just how old he was?

No wonder they tapped him to play Saruman...

So he was born in 1222? That's in time for the Hundred Years' War. I had heard about his time with the SAS, but I never imagined this kind of wartime service! Now I really want to see a biopic with a scene of a (relatively) young Christopher Lee in combat with a broadsword.
