Above all, it’s cowardice. They want someone else to do their dirty work. I think it could still backfire, since, first of all, Grassley completely shat the bed in the intro, from what I’ve heard, and secondly, it’s such a transparent sign of cowardice that I can’t imagine it fooling very many people who haven’t completely drunk the Kool-Aid. But yes, it does seem to be a tacit admission that the optics for this are terrible for them.
